52 years ago... If this song came out tomorrow, exactly as it was written then, it would be "Trending"... You can't say that about a lot of things, no matter how good they were in their time.

The greatest experience I've had in recent months is watching all these folks react to this Elvis song. I've now watched over 50 of them. I remember 1968 and this performance but, honestly, I don't think I appreciated the power of the song-the words and the passion with which he sang it (until now). It is really moving to see the amazing reactions and the emotions that so many have watching and listening. Glad we have this song from Elvis preserved.

It's a tribute to Martin Luther King who was assassinated in Elvis town. King used these words in his speech. Elvis was very sad! His manager wanted to close this 68 Come back special show, with a Christmas song, but Elvis did this!

I just break into tears after that. Elvis is so passionate that it grabs your soul and makes you feel what he’s feeling. That’s his greatest gift he left us. Unfortunately at too early of an age. RIP Elvis & know your passion still lives 43 years later I many new generations. 😢❤️🕺🏼🕺🏻🎸

I wonder what would have happened if Elvis had listened to Eddie bond, and stuck to truck driving ??? Damn, we wld have missed out on loads of great hits from this man. He had great looks, an electrifying voice, and he killed it on the stage each time. Good thing we have a great catalogue to listen to for years to come. R.I.P to the king of rock and Roll !!

Awww, big hug 4 you and this reaction. Did you know that Elvis actually knew dr. King and when he first got the news of the assassination, he was filming a movie and they had to shut down their production for a day because he went into a back room and curled up into a ball and just cried for hours. Crazy times that you can definitely hear all that emotion in his voice and it is so difficult to sing when you are choked with emotion but somehow he managed to walk the tightrope for this performance which I think was only two or three months after the assassination. It's also partly about Bobby Kennedy who just had been assassinated as well and of course the president had been assassinated a few years before that and then Malcolm X and others. This song is so moving and poignant in his performance is so amazing and deeply troubles me that it is still that relevant today.

There's another recording of him singing this song (a more low-key one) and he's very passionate in that performance too. Search for the "black leather suit" version.
