In the early 70s my dad worked for the Southern California Gas Company and he was basically gasman to the stars. One day he got a call and ended up at Elvis' house and met the King and spent some time chatting with Elvis. At the time my dad was the same age as Elvis and I remember him saying they were both the same height and he was also a huge fan. He said he respected him too much to ask for an autograph at the time and Elvis asked my dad if he had any kids. I was an only child and I must have been 6 or 7 when this happened and it turned out that Elvis called my school and they took me out of class and brought me to the principals office and I chatted with Elvis for a few minutes during that call. I was also a big fan even at 6 or 7 because my dad was always playing Elvis' 8 tracks in the car whenever we drove places. He was a cool dude and I will never forget that day.

In 1980, I drove up to the house. The gate was open and there was a house painter’s truck in the driveway. The front door was open and I walked in. The house was completely empty and I walked into every room I could without being noticed. I went in the backyard and pool area also. There was a great view from there. Eventually the painters saw me and kicked me out. BTW, on June 9, 1972, I was at Elvis’ first Madison Square Garden show.

I was living in Culver City when this was going to be demolished- A lot of people incl. me got together and signed petitions and contacted the Beverly Hills historical preservation Society- To see what they could do what we could do to stop the new owner from tearing the house down luckily they tracked down The original builder of the house who had no idea in the early stages that the new owner was going to demolish it- And because of the architecture and because he built it etc.. He got together with the Beverly Hills historical preservation Society- He brought the original paperwork of all his Homes- And because of when it was built where it was built and who it was built by - the new owners who were a building company- from what I understood. The homes that the builder of this house and his other houses that he had built there is a clause in the original paperwork that it cannot be modified significantly and it cannot be demolished or torn down. They all moved quickly To stop the current owner from demolishing a piece of history long story short sort of it had been approved and deemed a historic site by the BH Historical preservation Society and the contractors I believe put it up for sale since they couldn’t demolish it or modify it in certain ways. So the house is saved!

I watched a video the other day and they were talking about when The Sharon Tate's murder happened . Elivs had the gate covered with mental and he ask the fans to not hang out at the gate anymore once he went inside , because it wasn't safe . He told the fans he would sign their autographs and talk to them if they promised to leave once he went inside the house . He was worried about them hanging around at night around his gate after those murdered happened . They said , Sharon Tate's house wasn't that far from where Elivs' house was , so that's why he was concerned . You know that's why I loved him so much is he did care about his fans , unlike a lot of star's today . He was raised to have respect for others and he started out on the bottom . God gave him a talent and he went to the top , but he stayed humble . Don't get me wrong , I loved his music and his movie's too . I'm so glad you shared this !! I love it !!!

When Elvis was doing the Comeback Special he was working on the show with my friend's dad who was a Producer. One night he rode his motorcycle from this house on Hillcrest to theirs on Skytop, in Encino, at midnight! He said it was better as that way no one would recognize him. Elvis often rode at night. So they pulled a stunt on the neighbors saying to come over right away! The neighbors about fainted when Elvis answered the door! My friend wishes she had pictures of sitting on Elvis's lap in those days. Ah, well. It was TCB as usual! There is another Producer whose name gets associated with the Comeback Special but my friends dad Alan Blye did all the work and was responsible for shaping many a stars on TV shows, new and established. I sure wish Elvis could have lived without the secret of all those awful prescriptions. He deserved much more. The problem is that no one tells these people, "No!" when it comes down to that. Thanks for taking us to the house Jordan!

The house at the end of the cul-de-sac was the longtime home of one of the pioneers of television and all-time philanthropists, founder of St. Jude's Children's Cancer Research Hospital, Mr. & Mrs. Danny Thomas. The house being rebuilt across the street was not a re-build, but in fact a new build on a lot that had been forever vacant. How expensive and opulent was the estate when it was completed? Jay-Z & Beyonce, among other wishful buyers were outbid by the successful purchaser ["Minecraft" inventor] around late 2018 for [from memory] $60,000,000.00.

Jordan, you are very right about that house at the end of the cul-de-sac...that is Villa Rosa, an 18,000 square foot mansion built in 1970 by the late comedian Danny Thomas...it stayed in the Thomas family until 2000, when it was sold by his children...in February of this year it was on the market for $135 million but sold for right around $65 million, bought by the brother of the man who recently purchased the Playboy Mansion from Hugh Hefner...the house has a ton of history, Thomas also founded St. Jude's Hospital, and, at one time the home was rented by Julia Roberts and her family...when you are heading up Hillcrest you can see the rear of the house, its spectacular domed section of the house...best time to see it is at night when it is lit up

I appreciated that you matched-up the photos with the actual part of the gate, etc. I do that anytime I go where a famous person was or wear a famous event occurred. On another note, waaaay back in 1969, when I was 10, I was on vacation with my aunt & cousins and we went by that very house. My aunt, who was fearless, and an Elvis fanatic, pressed the button on the speaker at the gate. Some woman answered. My aunt asked if Elvis was home, because (she said) we were relatives - she concocted some lie to connect us - very distantly. The woman on the speaker said she "wasn't sure if he was home, she'd go look." (Really?). We waited for 15 or 20 minutes. Finally the lady said "Ma'am, Mr. Presley is not even home today." We all moaned (as did the Japanese tourists who were thinking we found a ploy to get him to come out to the gate and talk with us. We figure in reality, he was there. She probably always said upfront he wasn't home, but since she was afraid she might be turning away family, she went to see if he expected relatives. We further imagine he peeped out a window and said "Ah, hell, I don't know those people. Tell 'em I'm not here, maybe they'll go away." Lol. You can't do stuff like that today. We would have all been hauled-off to jail in today's world. Stars are too scared, and I don't blame them. I wouldn't want anything to do with fame or celebrity. I just want the money and lifestyle. But what an exciting few minutes for us thinking we'd see him.

He was the most beautiful man. His spirit shined in his face. He always did good for everyone and his voice is the most beautiful male voice ever. If I haven't heard him sing in, say a year, and then he comes on the radio, I remember why his voice is the best voice. He gave so much to the world. Thank you for sharing this. I didn't know about this house and seeing all the photos of him standing where you are standing is awesome.

Elvis was a kind and caring man, he knew his fans made him what he was. He never forgot that he never got a big head or thought he was better than the person in his audiences. His response to the political questions was something that Hollywood and other singers need to start doing. I wish Parker had not beat him into the ground with the touring and his gambling debts. I wish he had found a new manager, enjoyed life more and maybe he would have been with us longer. He was an original, and to this day no one has matched his charisma and stage presence. Sadly, the Memphis Mafia is just about all gone and we only have Lisa Marie and Priscilla left. Elvis will live on forever.

It is amazing this house still stands. Funny story on the house sale - I read it a month ago. I think Morton bought it, sold it, then his son bought it for twice what dad bought it for. You can look that up somewhere on Google. But I totally agree - this was the era of Elvis when he became The King, yet he was such a humble and funny guy. The movie, That's the Way it Is, captures this time period perfectly, with great footage from The International Hotel in Vegas (which is now the Westgate).

Sandi Miller took a large portion of the photos. She’s on FB. Also the ‘Elvis impersonator’ is Johnny Elvis Foster who knew him and took karate classes with Elvis. He’s also on Facebook, really nice guy. I know you won’t remember but I met you at the ‘Do Jo’ in August. Thanks for being so nice. We were blessed to have dinner at Marlowe’s with Billy and Jo Smith that same night. Take care Jordan 😊

To me, Elvis was defined in the 50`s and redefined in 1968., simply because without the earlier music the later performances would not exist. Music is an organic process, as you grow and build upon what has gone before. Elvis never wanted to sing in any of his films, and back in the 1950`s there are several interviews that Elvis gave to the media that clearly state that, Elvis adored James Dean,he studied this actor for hundreds of hours, he watched `Rebel without a cause' too many times to mention., Elvis desperately wanted to be a great actor like Mr James Dean. But Sadly that was not to be, thanks to the detestable Colonel, he forced one of the greatest, uniquely talented artist`s, to make those movies, for 8 years, not exactly James Dean material. it must have broken his heart, as it sure as hell broke mine. Just take a moment to think about what Elvis could have achieved musically in those 8 years? The world tours, albums and collaborations with other musicians, it would have been AWESOME! i am sure that if he had been given the choice of either being the highest paid performer in Hollywood or making ground breaking music, going on world tours, etc.i am quietly confident that he would have chosen the latter!. However all this frustration, anger and despair, did create for me the greatest most perfect musical performance of all time that was of course `The 1968 Comeback Special' and also the incredible albums that followed. The `68 comeback special' was complete and utter rebellion, the Colonel & NBC wanted a Jim Reeves approach whereas Elvis was thinking more `the Rolling Stones' :)) Elvis had to fight tooth & nail for that show and the albums, the only concession that Elvis made for the NBC show, was to sing one solitary Christmas song! He owned that stage, that show, he was perfection. It is just so sad that `The Rebel With A Cause' became unable to carry on. Just a little bit of trivia, if you are an A Team fan like myself, take a closer look at the percussion player ( if you haven`t already ) as that Tambourine player is none other than the late & great Lance Le Gault, aka Colonel Decker! Hahaha Anyway I wish you all love, light and happiness and for the sun to shine on you always, In other words keep listening to Elvis! :))))

I was there at Elvis’ gate 1174 Hillcrest in 1973 and spoke with his Gardner. Elvis was in Memphis at the time. The Gardner was showing me a new truck Elvis bought him. Btw, the house at the end of the culdesac was owned by Danny Thomas at the time
