I was stationed in German in the early 1990's. I was in the 3rd Armored Division and originally at Drake Kaserne in Frankfort. We cherished Elvis and loved his memory with the US Army.

Bad Nauheim really is a beautiful town even outside of the elvis attractions Friedberg should really be your next destination. has a lot of interesting stuff like the castle(built on the foundation of a roman fort), the former US base, the elvies presley square, the old school and the oldest jewish bath in western europe

What a surprise to see a video made of my home town here :D What a weird feeling to see you walk the streets and parks that I myself walked through hundreds of times throughout my life. There currently is an Elvis Festival going on, the 20th of its kind. Each year, dozens and dozens of Elvis fans drive through here in their oldtimer cars and in very oldschool American outfits and self-styled Elvis wigs. It‘s an interesting sight for sure. It’s very noticeable though that most attendees are 50+. It’s certainly a generational thing, which fits quite well age-wise too, Bad Nauheim is in the top 10 of oldest median age towns in Germany, thanks to its many spa and elderly care facilities.

I think it’s awesome what Bad Nauheim has done to honor Elvis having chosen it as his home while in Germany. Elvis would have loved to return to Europe and Bad Nauheim to see how much he was appreciated there.

I have heard a little bit about Elvis's US Army career, but I didn't know he was in Bad Nauheim... nor that Bismark and FDR had also visited that town! Thanks for the video! Also, nice animation at 0:18!

And country fans think of Willie Nelson. But none of them is the original. Brenda Lee recorded it first, but Gwen McCrae released her own version first.

Today I learned Elvis lived to be 42... I'd always assumed he died in his 20s somewhere, considering all the clips you see of him nowadays are of him around that age.

Looks interesting, thanks for the video. I'd expected something different because you're British, so what about the Beatles in Germany? But, yes, Bavaria to Hamburg, that's a long trip, and with your mask on on public trans, that doesn't seem very convenient. You quoted so many of Elvis' song titles, it's a shame that we're not allowed to include some music here. If we did, we could sing the Jailhouse Rock soon.

Teaching myself German for the 47th time. Just came across your site. Really good stuff. OT question. I'm curious about how sie, sie, Sie/ihr, ihr, Ihr (she, they, you/her, their, your) came to be. One would think that distinctive pronouns/possessive adjectives that remove the ambiguity would have arisen. Do you know how this pronoun quirk evolved in German? Thanks...
@mizapf

Maybe different forms collapsing into the same. Old High German used different vowels in unstressed positions which later became "e" (schwa sound like English a-) and were then completely dropped. sie = she was originally "siu" in OHG, while sie = they was "sie/sio/siu" (m/f/n). The ambiguity is typically solved by the declension of the verb (sie kommt = she comes, sie kommen = they come) or other context (ihr kommt = you (pl.) come, sie betritt ihr Haus = she enters her house, ihr betretet euer Haus = you (pl.) enter your house, sie betreten ihr Haus = they enter their house).

I wonder why Grafenwöhr in my area doesn't cash in on Elvis much more. Allegedly, he played his only concert outside of the US there in a little bar with just a borrowed guitar. Yes, that's most likely a lie.

Some more interesting facts about Bad Nauheim: - It has one of very few jewish synagogue, which survived the Progroms in 1938 and the following war - A lot of foreign diplomats "stayed" in Bad Nauheim during the war - It has the largest amount of Jugendstil buildings in europe
