A visit to the Elwha River at the bed of the former Lake Aldwell. The reservoir was located about 5 miles from the mouth of the Elwha on the Olympic Peninsula in the state of Washington. The reservoir was created in 1913 behind the Elwha Dam, which was fully removed in 2012.
In 2012, the Elwha Ecosystem Restoration project removed the Elwha Dam and began to restore the fisheries of the river. Immediately after the draining of Lake Aldwell, crews began planting native vegetation to stabilize the slopes from erosion and speed up ecological restoration.
The lake bed is accessible at the south end near the US Highway 101 bridge across the Elwha River and from the access road to the former Elwha Dam.
All access to the lake bed is by rugged trails and the riverbanks are filled with cobbles that offer plenty of ankle breaking opportunities. Trekking poles are recommended.
