Loved having the Elysia Audio rack in the studio earlier this year featuring some of Elysia's 500 series 2 channel processors and 500 series mic pre! Watch the video to hear how I was using the rack to spruce up a mix I did for Tori j last year! Then keep reading for some thoughts on each of the units and how I was using them in the video!
XFilter EQ - The folks at Elysia already know this, but for me this little EQ was the standout favorite unit in the rack. It's hard to describe the feeling you get manipulating a really good EQ in a subtle way that can bring out or tuck in areas of frequency spectrum that give you the chills. You can hear it doing that in the video, using only around 1dB moves up and down I was able to clean up some low mids, open up the top and upper mids and enhance the lows. And you can really hear it when it engages, it just sounds great!
XPressor Compressor - Who doesn't get a little bit excited trying out a new bus compressor for the first time? Just me? This thing brought a lot to the table with some fresh ideas on how to control your bus compressor processing. I thought the gain reduction limit feature was super handy and really found myself using the "warm" mode on this unit which changes the sound profile of the compressor by introducing a different transient response and harmonic make to the sound. Overall it's a solid, feature heavy, workhorse of a 2 bus compressor!
Nvelop - Everyone knows what a Transient Designer is right? This is the expanded on and improved version! Now, instead of just controlling attack and sustain over a sound entire sound, the Nvelop allows you to perform those adjustments to specific areas of the frequency spectrum. In the context of the video I found it super useful to further tuck in the lower mids by dialing back the sustain in the low mid area which in unique way created a touch of extra dynamic movement. In the same way I used the attack on the top end to crate a little extra excitement with the hat and other transient frequencies in that frequency area. This unit would get tons of use in anyones studio because most of us are already using some form of less cool transient designer and still getting super useful results. On that note, you can flip the nvelop into full range mode and it works just like the original design AND it has another mode that turns it into a shelving EQ if you didn't happen to be actively using the impulse shaping functions!
Karacter - This is Elysia's distortion/saturation box, and really this video is not a good way to explore how this box can be helpful in coloring a sound. Like the other units it has lots of features and sound options to dial in the vibe you are looking for but most importantly there is a mix knob, because this box can get sounding nuts pretty quickly so being able to dial back how much of that processed sound is getting through is a great way to feather in a unique color into any sound! In the video I have it on very lightly blended in at around 10%. Realistically I think the Krackter is more suited for things like drum parallel or something of that nature!
