Take your club and turn the face so it's actually closed fully then regrip it and play the ball, what happens is the club face opens on impact so the ball actually goes upwards because of the energy produced but this depends on the consistency of the bunker face and the depth of the embedded ball. Found this out by watching Seve and John Jacobs on video footage, genius understates these golfers

Question, I had a shot hit right under the lip in a very soft opening/area of a bunker. Really no reason a ball should ever enter this part of the course but here I was. The Ball ended up definitely buried in the sand but was technically under the grass area by at least 2-3 inches. So in your picture above imagine the ball insider the dirt part but touching the sand. I was debating if that was embedded ball and get free relief because technically the ball was about 12 inches under the earth haha. We took unplayable ruling.

Hi Wes. As your ball was buried in sand I think it was probably in the bunker (the ball is in a bunker when any part of it touches sand on the ground which is inside the edge of the bunker). However, (and as you mention) there is some doubt as to whether any part of the ball is actually inside that "edge of the bunker". It is difficult to be definitive without seeing the exact situation.

I actually had this last week. I was in the sand face though.

Hi Francis - Embedded in the sand face means that your ball is in the bunker, so no free relief I'm afraid.
