Short story, I worked with a couple of sacred Hams. We had a conversation about SHTF . I asked them point blank what authorities would even care, even if they were even still around...

It's funny and sad listening to people who say such things. They don't realize that anyone whom they get in touch with are probably not the government. I got my HAM license about 10 years ago. One of the "instructors" was about 5 ft tall and wide, owned a Subaru hatchback with about 20 antennas protruding from it and was adamant about FCC enforcement and that he tracks people down that break the FCC "laws". He continually told stories while wearing a Batman earring of his triangulating transmissions and confronting "violators". I am in law enforcement but did not identify myself as such, and I told him that the actions he's describing are ill advised and probably unhealthy for him to continue. He was annoyed that I thought so, and claimed that the HAM community has a responsibility to "Police" itself. I told him that there are real criminals out there that would think nothing of perforating his corpulent carcass and he should leave the confronting of rule violators to the professionals. Anyway, I have a HAM license, and have never used it since getting it. I do use GMRS all the time to talk to people I know, and occasionally respond to a unknown radio check to be helpful. Never understood the desire to talk to some disembodied voice for no specific reason. Anyway, I'm a HAM radio license holder, and that is my story.
@EmperorMingg
11 ай бұрын
That’s really interesting! I’m sure he thinks that he means well but it seems like an incredible waste of one’s free time to triangulate signals to report people like that. He’s largely the reason that amateur is a laughing stock. I won’t bother with my amateur license because the community is so weird (and a lot of the diehards at the amateur clubs are typically weirdos), all to speak on a few frequencies and talk about nothing but radio… life’s too short!

I transmitted video signals across campus in college via microwave with old modified voice systems, off a passive repeater down to another dish, then back. To do the math. And the FCC's never came a knocking. Yes, put me on the list now! It was also in the pico watts and the one FCC guy we showed was like that is pretty cool, not all are goons. I do think he would have been upset if we were "noticable" by "anyone"

I am also licensed in both GMRS and HAM since May 2022. I memorized all the correct answers and got my extra ticket within five months. I like to gloat alittle about this to HAMS who have been in this for 40 years. I still have my 2x3 call sign and call out on the edge of bands on HF and watch my QRZ lookup numbers climb. I have also joined the ranks of those VE teams in the ARRL and got accredited. I was asked once from someone Hamming for 25 years who went from general to extra at a test session. "How long you been HAMMING?" my reply, "9 months and I need your signature on this certificate". his jaw dropped and face turned red.

Then why get a license, only to never use it? Got mine 25 years ago and was very active for quite a few years. But I've since got mostly off the air because of the idiots I've encountered. And I thought we hams were supposed to be the friendly type! Guess not. Had one clown that said "I don't talk to people on the radio I haven't met in person first."! Really? Far as policing the bands, that's why we're able to do what we do and how we do it! We enjoy a lot of modes and bandwidth that others only dream of. And it's in large part because we rely on each other to keep things on track. For all the joker's I've met on air, I've also met some really cool folks! But there are a few to many clowns out there now for my taste. So I hardly even turn the rigs on anymore. Still have a scanner going. But that's about it.

Thank you for showing the applicable CFR citation regarding amateur station operation. It makes sense. Another common misconception is the use of GMRS by someone other than the licensee or the licensee's immediate family [47 CFR 95.1705 (c) (1) & (2)] and non-licensee operation in GMRS "to communicate an emergency message" [95.1705 (c) (3)]. They forget to check the definition of: "Emergency Messages. Communications concerning the Immediate safety of life or protection of property" [47 CFR 95.303 Definitions.] Pretty much the same thing as for amateur radio.

Here in Norway you need a VHF certificate to operate a VHF radio. Most boats have a VHF radio and also most boat owners with a VHF radio do not have the certificate to operate it. But still in an emergency absolutely no one cares if you call mayday without the proper certificates, in fact the authorities encourage people to have a VHF radio without license for use in emergency.

A hangnail is an acceptable threat to ones health and safety to operate a ham radio. Just please be sure to have as much spurious emissions as possible, that way you cover a fatter bandwidth just in case your friends are slightly out of band. Something to consider in an excrement hitting a fan situation is to think of your antenna as a spotlight. We’ve all seen different types of lights, from a pocket flashlight all the way up to those ginormous spotlights advertising car sales. The brighter your spotlight, the more people can tell that you’re there. If you wanted to Morse code me a message from one side of a field to another, a pocket flashlight would be a better option than the ginormous spotlight. Just something to consider.

There isn't enough fcc's people to stop that.

"Some people" have ignored the fancy rules for years and never gotten in any trouble by simply exercising common sense and not doing anything to draw unwanted attention. Or at least, so I've heard.

only thing I'd add to this otherwise wonderful explanation is that if you're in one of those emergency non-shtf situations, you do need to try using the methods you're legally allowed to use first, and just because you're in an emergency doesn't give you the right to be a jerk and interfere with other radio users.

I don’t think anyone will be seeking HAM radio to call for help if a phone or other more direct means of communication is available and working

I agree with what you say but I wonder if most people would know how to use a ham HF radio if they had no experience in doing so. What frequency to use, how to deploy a antenna that would work. Many more issues to consider than with a Baofeng

There are many, many mannnyyy people that know exactly how to do all of that, even though they didnt pay for a permission slip.

Randy's point has always been that you don't need a license to learn how to use HF radio. The lack of a permission slip does not forbid you from learning. Also don't forget that 99 percent of all critical communications is listening not talking.
