Thank you so much for this video! This has actually been on my mind lately as a prep I should do; now I have the info I need. FYI: on a video for another KZitemr, a commenter said that a ‘shower’ alternative she came up with is to half-fill a spray bottle with her favorite shower gel, then fill the rest with water. If you are having to use these make-shift toilets one could assume you don’t have the means to shower either. If you have the spray bottle prepped, however, you could stand on a towel & ‘spritz’ yourself clean. I thought I would prep a second spray bottle with just water, to ‘spritz’ rinse. I thought it was a great idea, so just sharing here for people to consider. 🌹

I have been out on mission trips. No shower. We take a smallest amount of water and ever little amt of soap to wash those important parts even a paper towel that can be trashed or a wash cloth you can clean before leavening the shower station. I would not mix soap and water together in a bottle. You could have put to much soap and have to use more water. Our toilet had a sewer line but no water. You have to take about 1/2 gallon of well water put in the toilet bowl after using to flash it down. I’m sure the same would do in the states if only the water was out. No broke lines.

Fun fact: if you want to put a pool noodle around the top of the bucket and can't find one because it's out of season... Most hardware stores carry pipe insulation that looks similar to a pool noodle and already has a slit down the long side and most even have an adhesive strip along the slit, for easy application. Yes, pipe insulation is usually much more expensive, but if you can't wait for pool noodle season, you'll have to pay... Just wanted to let you know there's options. 💕🌞🌵😷

This is very good information to have. Also important would be how to get oneself clean in low water situations, such as bathing/showering. My mom had a friend whose family escaped Germany during the 2nd world war. When things had initially gone really bad, and people had extremely limited water to use, you still had to get yourself clean. She said you’d fill up a pitcher (around 2 litres or so), and that was your allocation of water to clean yourself. You’d use a mug and a damp towel to get yourself wet, then soap up to get clean. Then you’d use the remainder of the water a little bit at a time to rinse off the soap, and use a damp towel to get off any lingering soap. To be honest, it sounded grim to be sure, but it taught me that people will find a way if they’re prepared to handle whatever situation life throws them. She loved taking nice hot showers in her home during good times, but when hurricanes came, and messed up the water system, we all knew how to cope with keeping ourselves clean thanks to her valuable advice all those years back.

I bought a copy of "The Humanure Handbook" ages ago, and I think it should be in every prepper library. We've used a 'sawdust' toilet for a year and a half without any issues. Something else I have in my preps are the materials for a three bucket water filtration system (three 5 gallon buckets, enough fine gravel, sand, activated charcoal to fill each bucket, nozzle for the bottom bucket). This can be used as a prefilter for things like a Berkey filter (helps them last longer since all particles and dirt are filtered) for all drinking water ~ and I still boiled mine before use. For the compost toilet you can use just about any organic matter; sawdust, pine pellets, leaves, even plain soil. The one thing I will recommend is that if you plan to ~ or think it is likely ~ that you'll be using this system for several months is to 1) paint the exterior of your bucket black, 2) have enough buckets to rotate through them, 3) don't use a bag and use the humanure composting system which processes everything into compost safely. If you want to separate your waste, it is far easier to purchase a urine diverter ~ and to build a box to hold the two containers. Piling up several months worth of fecal matter in bags is unsafe in any urban environment. Ideally several humanure compost bins would be set up. If carbon matter is used each time the toilet is used there is no odor ~ with or without a lid. The other thing to consider is toilet paper, or the lack of it. Purchase washcloths in bulk to be used as 'family cloth'. Keep three buckets of water by the toilet; one filled with clean water to wet the cloths, one filled with clean water to rinse them after cleaning in the bleach solution, one filled with a dry bleach/water solution. Change the clean water every day, and keep the bleach solution covered when not in use. Wet your cloth before using, clean it with the bleach solution and rinse, hang to dry. Once dry you can launder them as usual. Keep toilet paper for use during illness only, particularly for contagious illnesses. For feminine hygiene products, purchase reusable cloth pads or a menstrual cup for long term events. It's fine to store some for use for a month or two, but longer than that you are just wasting valuable storage space. I do keep a box of pads and a box of tampons in my first aid 'closet'. Both are excellent sterile products for large wounds or penetrating wounds initially to control bleeding. Lastly, purchase and install (check your local codes, you may be required to have a plumber install) a backflow valve in your sewer line. This prevents sewage from backing up into your home if the local system is down. You can bet your last dollar that there will be people still flushing, and every home that is lower than they are is at risk for this. If your home is contaminated with raw sewage, you will have no choice but to leave until such time that it can be properly cleaned. Pay the $40 for the valve, and pay a plumber if necessary to install it. The cost is minimal if it means your home is protected from contamination!

Very helpful, thank you! Just want to mention that sanitary pads and tampons are not sterile.
@LierinEdana
2 күн бұрын
@@L.J.01 Technically they aren't ~ but they are considered close enough for EMT use, and depending on what is going on, a tampon comes sealed in plastic wrap and will plug up a bullet wound until proper medical care can be obtained. For wounds that are large, or that must drain, pads do the same and are easier to wrap around a wound than baby diapers. Not everyone has (or can afford) trauma bandages/compression bandages. I've used them for both human wounds and on my livestock on occasion and never heard a complaint from doctors or veterinarians. I also know more than a handful of EMTs and other first responders who carry both in their kits which is why I mentioned it.

We used one bucket only. I had researched how to use the bucket system. I came across a KZitem channel called Off Grid with Doug & Stacy and they have been using buckets for several years and then putting their Poo into a composting pile lined with Straw. If you don't mind I would tell the folks to check out their channel. The way they do it works well. I had no smell and I used Sphagnum Peat Moss that I purchased from Lowe's. the moss is in a compressed bag so you have to break it up and have a bucket with it and a scoop to use. The Peat Moss lasted the whole 6 weeks for our family of 4. Anyway I only use you for canning and highly recommend you to anyone that will listen. This is so much better than using water for flushing in an emergency situation. Water would be too valuable to be flushed down the toilet. Another method I saw to use your own toilet like a bucket - shut off the water to the toilet at the wall. Flush one last time to empty the tank. (you can also save that water in a bucket to use later) With the toilet bowl and tank now empty, stuff a rag or something into the bottom of the bowl like a plug, so your bag doesn't slip down it. Now place your bag into the toilet bowl. Line the bowl just like you would a bucket, hanging over the top. Put another bag inside of that one and secure it at the top, under the toilet seat. You can put more than two if you like. Then just remove the used bag and handle/dispose of it like you would the bag from a bucket.

Why not just use your toilet already in bathroom for fecal? Just drain the water out of tank and bowl (can use it for one last flush if private septic). Then insert garbage bag and tape etc. a way to save space. Then could have the pee bucket next to toilet.

@@angelabarnes1547 , after being reminded of sewer gasses, the truth is... It would be easier to pee in the toilet, toilet paper goes in a bin and then flush when the bowl got full or stinky. Even if the sewer pipe was broken the pee would seep into the ground at the break and not cause any damage. The poo would be easier to dispose in the bucket. But, you're right this would eliminate the need for a second bucket. 💕🌞🌵😷

Pam: There are composting toilets for off-grid cabins and homes, also there are incinerator toilets which burn up human waste and turn it into a few light weight ashes. Not sure what they cost but they are fairly common items. The composting and incinerator toilets are mainly used in areas where it is not feasible to use a septic or lagoon system or in areas where there are severe shortages of water. The Rich Earth institute advocates using diluted human urine as fertilizers for lawns and gardens. This would help your gray water perform dual usage. I would never use human manure in my food gardens or orchards. It used to be considered safe to use processed/decomposed fecal matter and sewage on farm fields, but recent info has come to light that the heavy metals, salts and micro-plastics in human excrement cause the soil to become contaminated to the point of not being able to be used for human food and grain crop production. If fecal matter were dried sufficiently, I see no reason it could not be burned. I always try keep current on things such as these, incase a scenario such as you are describing should arise. Your channel presents good relevant info on things such as emergency preparation.

I find the concept of human urine and feces in the garden or anywhere else,repulsive.I don't care of it breaks down in a year or whatever.I refuse to even use animal waste in my plants! It is absolutely disgusting. Be aware if you do buy products in bags for your plants or garden, that many companies are now adding "sludge", as in sewer sludge, to compost, soul mixes, etc-i make my own compost with vegetable scraps but needed 1 bag of soil for a special plant.I started reading what was in the soil mixed to make sure it was just organic soil, but found many products had strange ingredients. When I looked it up, since it's called different names, it was human waste sludge.🤮🤮🤮 this go green initiative is going to kill us all, if not by diseases in our produce,e bikes and cars setting our homes on fire, toxic chemicals from plastic recycling, etc. be careful out there ❤🙏

6:55 I have a five gallon jug with a spigot. I can't see your spigot clearly, but it's better NOT buying one with a spigot with a push button or a lever that you have to hold down. Because... how do you hold down the button or lever with one hand and wash your other hand. My jug has a spigot that as a lever that you turn like a faucet. I turn it on just enough for a slow trickle and that works great! You can wash your hands or dishes without having to hold down that button. Now, the jugs with the button are great for filling water bottles and pots for cooking. The jugs with spigots cost more than bottles without. So only buy one with the spigot and refill it when necessary from a jug with a regular top. 💕🌞🌵😷
@suzisaintjames
3 күн бұрын
One more thing, my jug leaks from different places around the spigot. Probably one drop about every 10-15 seconds. Not much, but when you have to haul water, every drop counts. So instead of introducing some sealant (with who knows what toxic chemicals) to seal up the drips... I just rotate the jug, so the spigot is pointing straight up in the air. No drops, no toxic chemicals. A win, win in my book. (I also like tipping the jug up because I don't have to turn the faucet off. When I tip the jug back down, the water starts trickling out, just like I like it. 💕🌞🌵😷

I had seen another similar video that suggested using the thing hospitals use called urine hats to put in the bucket for urine. Then, as Pam mentioned add some gray water and dispose in the yard. Then you would only need one bucket. What I have more questions about is disposing of feces. Others have spoken of burying it, but away from water source. In a smaller yard that would be a problem. But I can't picture storing it anyplace.

Shortly after we moved into this house I started preparing. I canned, dehydrated, I had everything covered but emergency waste management. We now live in a subdivision on 1/3 acre, so no digging an outhouse here. I have heavy duty black bags, they just go into the toilet bowl. Then I found a product that then turns said waste into a gel, it solidifies so no liquid. How we get rid of the bag later was a moot point. But we could tape shut for storage in the garage. The main thing is do not overfill them as they will be heavy.

I know you didn't talk about water storage, but I wanted to suggest people invest in a bathtub bladder. In an emergency filling your bathtub with water is a good idea until you stop and think... I know what's been in that bathtub, do I really want to drink water that's been stored there? Yes, you can wash your bathtub, but in an emergency will you be so meticulous to get every bit of soap scum & dirt and every bit of cleaner off the tub, before filling with your family's drinking water? A bathtub bladder is a big plastic bag, fit to the size of your bathtub. You can seal it keeping the water clean and your dog out. An open tub of water can collect dust and bugs. Be sure to get a pump to refill your jugs. Most bladders come with one, but be prepared. 💕🌞🌵😷

Right the tub is not for drinking water, unless you use the collection bladder. Tub water is great for flushing the toilet assuming the sewer is in working order. If you're on a well & septic system the sewer pipe should have been installed below the frost line and will continue working. Don't forget a gallon of water is nearly 8.4lbs per gallon, so I'd not be putting more than 60 gallons in that tub. Also an average water consumption per toilet flush is 7 gallons .
