1st Impression (Part 2) was played to death on the radio, back in the day. It's probably the least interesting section of the suite. The album Brain Salad Surgery is a complete work. It opens with a hymn, then goes into Alberto Ginestra's Toccata. This piece is a bit too much for normal people, but sets up the sense of fear and foreboding that sets up the "carnival of evil," yet to come.

This is a Greg Lake showpiece constructed in the studio - he plays acoustic guitar, electric guitar, and bass along with the vocals. All three members of this trio were immensely talented, but Lake sometimes seemed to be overshadowed by Emerson and Palmer on keyboards and drums. This song lets him show his stuff.

What is that you ask in the last section of the song? Keyboard synthesizer of which Keith Emerson was one of the masters. I believe he was the first to incorporate the instrument in the genre. That’s always been one of my favorites that I had to have my guitar instructor years ago show me how to play. 🎸

The guitar, writing, and singing were all Greg Lake. If you are interested in hearing more of his singing, listen to the first King Crimson album, In the Court of the Crimson King. The band first were fortunate to have Greg Lake singing such songs as I Talk to the Wind, and Epitaph. Greg's enunciation and phrasing made the songs more accessible to American speakers of English. Aside from the first concert in London's Hyde Park, Greg never performed live with KC. He quit the band to join Emerson, Lake, and Palmer. Please consider three songs from that first King Crimson album, I Talk to the Wind, Epitaph, In the Court of the Crimson King, or any two and maybe all three. You will be amazed!

You would love their early live stuff. Keith Emerson practically dances with his moog organ playing it backwards jumping over it. Tilting it all kinds of ways and practically playing the shit out of it .... it’s amazing to see.

Learned how to play this song back in high school. Such a brilliant composition. Greg Lake is an amazing guitarist, although he played the bass most of the time. Keith Emerson (the keyboardist) was pretty 'tame' in this, but he was actually a demon XD he used all sorts of synth tech to (aggresively) make weird sounds but can very delicate with a piano. A couple of my favorite is 'Take a Pebble' and 'Hoedown' (if you want to hear how crazy the keyboardist can be). Cheers :)

Keith Emerson was a classical trained pianist and first to use a Moog Synthesizer in his songs. Their live version of Fanfare For the Common Man is EPIC. All alone in an empty sports stadium! Sadly, he committed suicide several years ago because he couldn't keep up his level of performance and felt he was letting his fans down 😔 Their WORKS album is a classic with PIRATES is a masterpiece!
