A rare live performance by Emerson, Lake & Palmer of the song 'Trilogy' from their 1972 album of the same name. This song was only played by the band twice at the beginning of their first 1972 U.S. tour. starting with a March 21, 1972 concert at the Denver Coliseum.
This performance, introduced by Keith Emerson, was on March 22, 1972 at the Long Beach Arena in Long Beach, California. Pictures of the band on and off stage during the "Trilogy" album era provide a nice visual tribute to band's strong musical partnership and the lives of both keyboardist Keith Emerson (November 2, 1944 - March 11, 2016) and vocalist/bassist/guitarist Greg Lake (November 10, 1947 - December 7, 2016).
The backing tape for this performance that Keith Emerson mentions at the start of this video were recently put up for auction per the link and item description provided below. You'll see three pictures of the reel-to-reel tape and the hand-written notes on the case it was in as well as lots of detail about the location, date and stage purposes involved: www.worthpoint.com/worthopedi... 2XxoFPlFQ_7bADAg6rDm0Nn T0xKO K0CIeo
KEITH EMERSON, EMERSON LAKE & PALMER 1972 TRILOGY TOUR / RARE STAGE TAPE / ELPTwo track reel-to-reel backing track stage tape used by Keith Emerson and Emerson, Lake and Palmer for their 1972-3 'Trilogy' tour. In order to perform select songs from the 'Trilogy' album onstage during their 1972-3 tour, Emerson Lake and Palmer utilized backing tracks for some of Keith Emerson's keyboard parts. Up for auction is one of the Trilogy tour stage tapes which was recorded on BASF stock at Advision Studios in March 1972 and comes from the private collection of a former recording industry professional who has owned it for the past twenty years. Provenance (history of ownership) :Keith Emerson / Snuffy Walden, guitarist for Stray Dog. The front of the tape box bears a handwritten label which states: (1. Trilogy Backing Tracks- Moogs Pt. 2 (2. Bolero - "For Live Replay" Backing Tracks - w/tuba solo -w/trumpet solo & gt; (Heads Out). The tape bears a recording date of 9/3/72 which as per British date formatting states the day first, the month second, and the year third which establishes the recording date as 9 March 1972. As per ELP tour date info provided by the Fetherston.Tripod website, ELP commenced their tour for Trilogy in North America on 21 March 1972, a few weeks after the tape was made. As per the website ProgArchives, the backstory for this rare stage tape is as follows: [Keith] Emerson: "Carl wore an earphone, and played the drum in sync with a Greg played the prerecorded chords on the Mellotron. The trouble arose after playing 'Abaddon's Bolero' about 4 times live - the tape went bad and the sound stopped going to Carl's earphone. Carl continued to play without his earphone, but at the climax, the sound from the backing tape was lost, and then it was only the three of us playing. We decided to stop using it after that. It was too risky and also Carl did not like playing to a backing tape. This happened in Germany in 1973."Despite the above recollection by Keith Emerson, the tape appears to be in excellent overall condition and was playable with no problems as of circa 2000. Please note that baking restoration may be required and/or advisable prior to playing/transfer.
