I just have to say, Greg Lake is one of the most underrated bass guitarists, and guitarists, in the history of rock music. His bass parts are often incredibly complex, but he seems to play so smoothly and effortlessly. And the guitar part on this piece, starting at about 1:20 (where he doubles what Keith is playing on synth) is amazing. I've just spent the last few days trying to figure it out -- it's some of the most difficult guitar music I've ever tried to learn.

Many may not realize that the electronic sounds that begin at 1:58 are created from Carl Palmer's synthesized drum set. Emerson is not playing anything at this point. Carl's custom made stainless steel drum set weighed over 5000 pounds, and the synthesized components were added to it. They could be switched on or off at will.

@MikoSquiz - it was a different time. peoples minds were blown by this. they;ve not seen nor heard anything like it then, and that was a big part of the 70s...the novelty of virtuoso players, big stage effects (Kiss, etc) creative new "progressive" music that took rock to it's extremes...all were new...so then it didnt look indulgent...it was creatively the first time such things were seen so there were no reference points to think of.
@RocknJazzer

@doctoralex100 - you must mean in the 70s creativity was everywhere, not the 80s...unless you mean 80s technology that made bad music...digital drums and cold synths that ruined real music and led us to what music is today. just think of all the bad music from the 80s...new wave...rap...techno...hair metal...death metal...not much good prog or fusion in the 80s either. The 80s were about technological advances, both good and bad (bad for music, good for computers)

@5jerry1 : I never doubted that they are experts on their instruments. But their music seems to me about playing difficult sections a fast a you can: "art pour l´art" but no structure, substance and emotion. That attitude reminds me of Jazz musicians. It´s not that I can´t relate to Progressive Rock (I like Genesis very much - although even they often favored style over substance in their early days). Finally me say: ELP fans are nice people!
