EMETOPHOBIA AWARENESS DAY 2024 - 10 YEAR ANNIVERSARY
Today is the ten year anniversary of the very first Emetophobia Awareness Day.
The day was originally founded by Rob Kelly, the creator of the Emetophobia-Free programme and he along with the whole team at Emetophobia-Free are just as passionate now as we were then about raising awareness of this relatively common, often severely debilitating but hidden phobia.
Emetophobia is the pathological fear of being sick or seeing other people be sick. Those who suffer with Emetophobia often avoid lots of things in their life and do things to try and keep themselves safe but avoid telling other people about their phobia which is why it is also known as the secret phobia and can be an incredibly lonely and isolating phobia to live with.
We are going bigger than ever this year to spread awareness. Over the next month we will be sharing 10 little known facts about Emetophobia, 10 common symptoms to look out for and 10 ways you can help someone you know who is suffering and what’s more on from the 10th April 2024 we will holding a 10 day event in which we will be giving away brand new FREE resources to help anyone who is struggling with this phobia overcome it and sharing updates in the field of Emetophobia research.

Emetophobia is the fear of vomiting/sickness: either yourself, other people, or both. Research suggests 0.1 to 8.8% percent of the population have a fear of being sick (Hout & Bouman, 2011). Emetophobia is a debilitating phobia, which significantly impacts your life: sufferers are chronically anxious and go to great lengths to avoid encountering anything sickness-related, which provides temporary relief but often results in a rollercoaster of anxiety, fear and exhaustion.
