I have both EMG's and Duncan Blackouts. Both in Gibson Les Paul Studios. I found the same thing as in this video. If I set my high gain amp for the Blackouts and then switched to the guitar with the EMG's without changing any settings it sounded like I needed a new battery in the EMG's. You could simply turn up the gain though. Turn up the bass if you want more bass. This is a good comparison of the actual output though. I thought I was crazy but this validates what I've found.

I have blackouts ahb-1b in mine (only have the bridge pickup) and i have to say it sounds amazing. It can play whatever i want, amazing output and amazing clean sounds if i want them. So i can recommend you guys to go with SD. But you can hear them anyways so decide based on your own preference.

Quality video. I don't usually comment but I've been trying to figure out for a while now what my ears were hearing when I compared my sons' Schecter Hellraiser to a Blackjack I played in guitar center. My sons' guitar with the EMG's sounded good but the Blackjack with the SD's blew his sound away. Until I heard this comparison I had thought it had to do with the amp settings but SD's definitely have a slightly higher bottom and top end frequency where as the EMG's have a more defined mid-range.

Duncan's are hands down the best pickups around. I play bass, and I use the Steve Bailey signature tone circuits in the 18v mode with the active soap bars on my 4-string fretless. They're so awesome sounding that I am gonna use the same on a 6-string that I am having custom built.

Thanks for the comparison. I definitely prefer the sound of the blackouts in this video. Sounds like they have way more gain, so the blackouts would be more versatile in that way; you can turn them up or down.

Very different pups. Honestly the EMG fared better in both the clean and hi-gain comparison than I thought they would. Obviously most people should ignore the different level of output given the same amp configuration since every pup is different and that's why amps have knobs! You're supposed to dial each guitar + pup combo to get the right sound for that specific setup. I actually preferred the EMGs in both comparisons more than the Blackouts... which surprised me. The EMG sounded cleaner in both which sounded great and less bass heavy, the Blackouts bass were a bit heavy handed. With that said I could totally see having a guitar setup with each for different sounds and styles. If every pickup sounded the same we'd no versatility and less reason to buy multiple guitars!

I am glad that this video notes that he backed the gain off on the Blackouts. On most comparisons I have found the Blackouts to be a bit overpowering and muddy. They sound a lot better set with the gain backed off a bit. I think they compare better to an 81 in that circumstance. I have a guitar with 81s (at 18 volts) that I like in some circumstances, it sounded terrible through my friend's amp the other day though.

I like both pickups! I have 2 guitars with both emg81/60 (esp) and SD AHB-1 set (jackson). You know it's just a question of taste, both sound brilliant, if you play metal. As for this video, the 81 still sounds kind of weak, I asume it lacks distortion and level. In my opinion, if you cranck the gain all the way up, the 81 will blow up your amp. I go with EMG. Cheers!

blackouts seem to have more gain and low's, but emg has enough gain and better clarity. when he shreds the difference is obvious. with emg you hear every note, i can't say the same thing about blackouts. i guess the blackouts could sound better at power chords. but still, i prefer the emg.

"AHB-1 has much more gain than EMG 81, so, for a fair comparison, I put the same value of gain for both pickups" I can't understand this sentence. If AHB-1 has more output, should'nt you have lowered the gain for that pickup? Cause here, your amp/distortion settings seems to do much more justice to the SD (just see the top comment ;). Anyway, great comparison :)
