www.bjjweekly.com - Emily Kwok shows us a sickle sweep from open guard, as well as a variation and a drill series that can be used to help your timing.
Nice, we just practiced this drill last night. At first for most of us it was pretty confusing but as we drilled it out the further along we got it became smoother and more fluid!

Nice. I was taught to switch the foot to the opposite hip for the "Tomahawk" or "sickle" sweep. You try the "tripod" and then switch to hit the "tomahawk". Gonna try this variation tonight ;)

I really like the way Emily teaches. I've been wrestling with these 2 sweeps forever, I always saw how they are interchangeable, but when rolling live, I always go blank and loose the opportunity for the sweep. Definitely going to try that drill at the end. Thanks !!

Thanks Emily. I was teaching this in class the other night. I like how you switched between the 2 techniques and used it as a drill.

My long legs can rock the open guard sickle sweep, but what I'm running into with higher belts is if my setup isn't perfect I'm vulnerable to ankle locks. Do you have any advice on this?

Was always taught these sweeps with the cross grip also but get your point about the ankle being trapped and gripping one arm to prevent them from posting. Have to try with this grip to see what it feels like.

@chinamantopteam Don't forget that your hand is still down at your opponent's ankle, keeping the leg nice and straight when you go for the sweep and you're using his momentum as he goes down to prop you up to your feet. No need for a cross grip because your opponent will need to kind of have ankle free from your grip in order for him to stop the sweep. Don't know if i am making sense to you.

Used to sweep everybody with this when I was a white belt before they eventually caught on. I wouldn't use any sleeve grips though, just grabbed the ankle which let me pull it off quicker with less setup and people wouldn't suspect it.

My variation I learned was identical except we pushed off the opposite hip of the opp with the same leg. I dont think it matters. They key is the heel sweep and pulling. This is a horrible position to be in a street fight and you better get up fast

My instructor taught me the second sweep with a cross grip of the sleeve, is that also correct?
@hungmichael8
4 жыл бұрын
yup mine showed both sleeves...if you can't get one sleeve, go for the other one. I think they both work. I think what is important for the 2nd tripod sweep to work is making sure the grip on the foot is the same side as the straight leg on the hip. I think the opponent sleeve grip can be both sides, probably just whatever you can grab.

I had so much success with this sweep, i was a white belt easily passing purple belts with this one, the difficult part is to come up while doing it though. you have to launch him into the air and drag yourself from his weight

been drilling these 2 sweeps for ages... but shouldn't her grip for these 2 sweeps be a cross grip instead of the single side grip? opponent could still post and use jiujitsu stand up to recover

What's a good way to complete the pass after hitting this sweep?
@chump203

I'd say a knee cut pass is the most obvious. You could also probably do a back step pass if you change the grip from sleeve to lapel

This won’t work. You also need control of his left leg or else he’ll step forward and shift his weight on it. Just learn a sickle or hook sweep instead.
