American author and professor of creative writing, Emily Raboteau is joining the CapitaLiterature 2022 program with a public lecture on the role of literary writers in the combat against the climate crisis. Emily and professor of philosophy, Ognyan Kassabov discuss different rhetorical strategies that writers can deploy for effective climate communication, as well as the importance of storytelling in media about climate change.
Emily Raboteau is an American author and Professor of Creative Writing at the City College of New York. Her books, The Professor’s Daughter and Searching for Zion, explore themes such as race and family bonds, and are both winners of the American Book Award. She has publications in The New York Times, The New Yorker, and The Guardian. She creatively uses writing and photography as a means to draws attention to the climate crisis, whether through a visual exploration of New York City’s bird murals or by sharing intimate stories about environmental catastrophes happening around the globe in a Twitter thread.
