"Stan" is fantastic story telling but it is fiction. He wrote the song because in '99 after his first album he became very popular in America but then Dr Dre released his second album and it had a couple of features with Eminem and that made him more popular. So this guy went from struggling and hardships to a famous person. He became so popular that fans looked up where he was living and parked in front of his house, placed tents on his front yard. People were following him into the bathroom when he was in a restaurant or so. And all this happened before his second album came out. When the Marshall Mathers LP came out it changed everything. It changed the culture, it changed rap, it changed his life and of everybody surrounding him and it was important for me. So a lot of the songs in his second album are about the changes he was going through. For him there was no way back, he became a public good, everybody wanted it a piece of him. The Slim Shady LP his first studio album made him a star in America, The Marshall Mathers LP made him a worldwide phenomenon. This album sold 26 million copies and is regarded as one of the greatest albums ever made. The fact that this man was white, grew up in a black neighborhood and was so controversial because of his lyrics made him bigger than life. From '00 till '04 he was the biggest thing happening in the music industry. The song "Stan" became so popular that it even made it in the Oxford Dictionary to describe a person who got obsessed with their idol. Mark Chapman is a good example. He was so obsessed with Lennon that he killed him. In the eighties we would call him obsessed, delusional but nowadays we would call him a "Stan".

Also don’t forget that he was also bashed and ridiculed over some of the comments in this song as he was labeled a homophobe and was targeted by the gay community which led to him doing that duet with Elton John at the Music awards in 99-00 I believe. Which was also funny cause I believe he won a award for Stan earlier in the night then did the duet and shook and hugged Elton. And till this day it is still talked about as one of the greatest performances of Marshall’s Career.

This man is an icon. You need to see the uncensored version to truly appreciate this song and story. You miss the fact that he tied his girlfriend up and locked her in the trunk of the car. With Em you really have to listen to the explicit version. A lot gets lost otherwise. "Stan" has become a common name for over zealous fans (think Stalker+Fan=Stan). One important thing to know is that Eminem has a way with words. The lines in his songs often have layered meanings. I usually recommend "Rap God", "Godzilla" or the MGK song and Em's rebuttle but since you are so new I really think you need to start with his earlier stuff. I do hope to see more reactions to Eminem though. I think when you really start listening to his stuff you really appreciate just how brilliant a lyricist he is.

Marshall Mathers, Eminem, Slim Shady are all the names he goes by, and he is one of the greatest rappers alive if not of all time. He was a poor nerdy kid from Detroit who was abused by his mother and bullied at school severely. And then, he became the best battle rapper in Detroit and got signed by Dr Dre, and went on to cement himself in greatness. There was obviously a lot of controversy along the way, most of which I believe to be overblown. Nevertheless, he continues to be an insanely talented, genuinely funny, and legitimately good person. Even if he does say some f***ed up stuff.

Little bit of information to help you out later. Any pre-2010 song the official video is always the censored version. In 2010 music videos moved from basic cable to on demand and online so they didn’t have to censor it anymore.

Bonnie (Bonnie and Clyde) , Em made a song in the previous album album (97 bonnie & Clyde) where Hailie (Eminem's daughter) is Bonnie and Em is Clyde (dark song about killing Kim). Ronnie is Em's uncle and best friend (at that time) because they were about the same age and he killed himself.

I watched your reactions on KZitem TV, then had to grab my phone to comment. I want you to know there is a 31 year old woman ( who sometimes feels like a 13 year old girl) who is listening to you as you listen to Stan, wishing with all her heart that you were her dad, that we were hanging out in the kitchen and I was explaining to you the significance of the name Bonnie. When my "real" dad found out I was listening to this song, I was beaten mercilessly to the point of bruised ribs and a broken wrist...And I am just so happy to see a dad out here, listening to the artist that changed my life, and hes getting goosebumps like me, and his eyes are widening at the same lines as mine....and there is someone out there who is feeling the same emotions I did when I first heard this song....your son is lucky. I am wine drunk and emotional, and your reaction has genuinely touched me. I know this will never be seen, but God, I am so happy dads like you exist. Thank you sir.

not based on a true story. The song was actually inspired by the Song the Chorus and Melody sample is from "Thank You" by Dido (who is playing Stan's Girlfriend in the video, BTW). She was a pretty popular pop/folk singer from the UK and at the time Thank You was climbing the charts Eminem heard the chorus (My Tea's gone cold, I'm wondering Why, i got out of bed at all...) and as he listened to it he got the image of Stan, this obsessed fan in his head. as far as I understand the song wrote itself in under 10 minutes. Eminem got Dido's permission to use the clip and her song as the backing, and the rest is history.

The PG version of this video has you lose like half the words! If you can handle cussing, I highly recommend that you watch the explicit versions of Eminem’s stuff. I hope you keep going. He has a lot of great songs. Fun fact: this song coined the term “Stan,” which is commonly used everywhere for years now to refer to obsessive fans. People use it without knowing the origin. I’m here for more discovery of Eminem! I love reactions to his album Kamikaze, but I feel like you might need to do more of his older stuff first to give you context. I think Slim Shady would be a good next one for you. Maybe Darkness.

Thanks Sarah! Since I don't know my audience, I'll need to stick with the "PG" versions, just to be safe. I'll check out the other versions off line to gain a better understanding of the song. On thing that I had missed was that his girlfriend was in the truck (or back seat) when he went over the railing. That added quite a different dynamic altogether.

A lack of expository knowledge isn't always a disadvantage when dissecting topics or ideas, and MOST ESPECIALLY art. Em fans know well enough that he's always gonna say crazy things, crazy rhymes, the whole shebang. And that's cool. But sometimes "outsiders" have, as some people say a "fresh pair of eyes", and see, hear, or just observe moments and pieces that everyone else who was caught up in the craze may have missed. You've pointed out a couple things already that I never saw, and now I'm like "Dang, I gotta relisten smh." Keep doing what you do.

Larry, you can't do Eminem censored. You will miss some of the most important stuff. I get why you would try to, but Em cusses and is non-PC for reasons. Sometimes for story (like here) and sometimes for flow (incredibly important when talking about rap), but always for reasons.

I don't know if someone commented already, so I'm sorry if this is redundant. I'm guessing the name Bonnie is from '97 Bonnie and Clyde, a song from the Slim Shady LP. It came out in 1999.
