cannot honestly think of any other LFC player who played with such a combination of skill, determination, strength, energy, and pleasure. and he did it for so many enduring years, contributing to so many chapters of our illustrious history. we were so fortunate to get this man to play for us. such a wonderful winning and genuine smile on his face. rest in peace Emlyn, and may perpetual light shine upon you.

My first game stood on the Kop in August '71. It was Emlyn's birthday, "Come all without, Come all within, You ain't seen nothing like the Mighty Emlyn" roared the Kop. We beat Leicester City 3-2. ...and Emlyn is joined today by another of those famous 70's reds, Tommy Smith. RIP lads.

I had the pleasure of meeting Emlyn Hughes when I worked for Butlins many years ago. He came into our restaurant and was very friendly, talking about football and the success he had as a Liverpool and England captain. A true legend of the English game.

Great player, great sense of humour. From an Arsenal fan,Emlyn taken from us too soon.I used to enjoy reading his column in the paper,he never pulled no punches. So enjoyed his opinion of Terry Venables,he was the only man who never rated him as a coach.Emlyn Hughes fabulous player

A lot has happened from the last days he played until now. but from my generation he was it! Then of course all the star talent also came but from this Fullback or defender that still loves soccer, emlyn hughes is eternal and will never be forgotten so in a way he goes on.

Crazy horse they called him as usual a gentleman of the field as well. The team photo at the start was probably the team i first saw as a kid. 70's and 80's Liverpool were as good as midern day teams..pass and move that what they did...direct football...beautiful.

Liverpool were masters of the morphing of their team, coming & going or staying. Before you knew it there was another classic side. Some only stayed a few years as the manager brought another striker say to replace a equally good player for the good of the next team in the making. Bob Paisley was the architect of The Boot Room, not Shankley. That's all gone now.

Does anyone remember a goal scored by Emlyn Hughes vs Southampton at Anfield April 1971 or 1972, he started the move very deep in his own half and kept running forward to volley it home after a number of passes? Better still can anyone post film of it?

+redmuso47 Was there with several friends from Bradford.1st May '71.Our team,Bradford(Park Avenue) had no game and none of us had ever been to Anfield so went on train.Stood on Kop and were told NOT to stand behind crush barrier 'cos if/when Reds scored...! Also if a pee was needed.go where we stood! Were asked if we'd come up from Southampton, then realised not with our Yorkshire accents!Kop all chanting "Alehouse"at Southampton as they'd been called a pub team by Shanks shortly before.Goal was a belter,1st half, must have been 30yarder.Think would have been goal of season but too late, went to Coventry's Ernie Hunt's volley from "illegal" flicked-up free kick vs Everton ironically! Never had chance to revisit since.
