This is my favorite Mr. Knightly. He seems to understand his community and accept both their good and bad qualities, even his own and Emma's. He seems to know that his love is not blind, and that Emma is not perfection.

I really enjoyed both 1996 films, and the 1996 TV one is still my favourite overall adaptation of Emma and has my favourite casting of most of the characters (Emma, Harriet, Jane Fairfax, and some others). However, the 1972 version is also very good ! I absolutely adore Mr Knightley's portrayal, it is my favourite one. The story works best as a miniseries I think. Otherwise too little time is spent on each plotline, especially those which are supposed to last a while, like Mr Elton's supposed courtship of Harriet Smith.

The best version and truest to the book.

I enjoyed it but I think 1995 was the truest to the novel. In this script much of the dialogue was changed whereas it is more often verbatim in the 1995. When Emma said the thing about not being brother and sister in the novel he said, "Brother and sister? No." But in this version he says, "Brother and sister, No indeed not." The part about Harriet in this version was far from the novel as was the Box Hill excursion. He didn't even say, "Badly done." to Emma as he helped her in the carriage where she was alone and cried.

love this version. the actors look a little drab to our modern tastes but the intonation and pace of the novel is very true to the original. and this Emma is actually likeable, unlike other versions that make her either bratty or bitchy.
@lizardas
3 жыл бұрын
She wasn't all that likeable in the book. She was a big snob and could be callous, selfish and cruel. Jane Austen wrote of her, "I am now writing a character that no one but myself will much like." However, Emma's character does evolve, and in the end we can appreciate her growth.

***** I don't agree with you at all. I've known plenty of dumbass "white" women who smoked and drank while pregnant, and some who used drugs as well. Being "PC" has nothing to do with it. I still don't necessarily think you're racist. I think you just haven't seen as much of the varied world as you think you have.

This version is okay. But it fails to show us Emma's frustration. She cannot marry. Knightly loves his independence and he is frusturated. He wants Emma but he is older, and Emma is beautiful. They are both angry and frusturated.
