Please join us for a public talk by Emma DeSouza, "Turn of the Tide: The Future of Northern Ireland’s Peace Process." Each generation presents an opportunity for change. In the context of Northern Ireland, a new generation unencumbered by the divisions of the past has been born. As Ireland, both North and South, grapples with the political and societal impacts of Brexit, the so-called peace generation is carving out a new path.
Emma DeSouza is a journalist, campaigner, and peacebuilder. She is the Founder and Co-Facilitator of Northern Ireland’s Civic Initiative, Director of the Emerging Leaders Program with the National Committee on American Foreign policy, and a Northern Ireland advisor on peace processes and policy.
In 2020, Emma successfully delivered substantial changes to UK immigration law after a five-year court case to bring legislation in line with UK commitments to the Belfast/Good Friday Agreement. The case has been referred to as the first human rights case of the Agreement and resulted in changes that reaffirmed the identity and citizenship provisions, while delivering EU family reunion rights to people in Northern Ireland.
Following this, Emma established the first All-Island Women’s Forum within the National Women’s Council of Ireland, a new peacebuilding structure that brings women from across the island of Ireland together to work collectively in addressing women, peace, and security issues. Emma served Chair and Facilitator of the Forum from 2021-2023, and continues as a member.
In 2023 Emma founded the Civic Initiative, a new participatory structure that brings together a wide range of civic society organizations to create a space for deliberative dialogues on advancing and supporting peace, reconciliation, and wellbeing.
Emma is an accomplished journalist, writing for the Irish Times, Irish Examiner, The Guardian, Open Democracy, Byline Times, and several other publications. For the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement she hosted a six-part podcast series on Northern Ireland’s Peace Process titled ‘Lost in Implementation’.
