Brexit happened because the EU refused to listen to David Cameron when he first went to the European parliament seeking some concessions and flexibility from the EU. People in the UK saw the EU being entirely ineffective in dealing with migrants trying to get into Europe where UK, Germany, Holland , Sweden were the countries most sought after by the migrants. Nothing wrong with immigrants and controlled and appropriate migration but what they got was no control and in fact active facilitation of migrants with Italy in particular being left to its own devices with minimal EU help. The EU is also seen as expansionist and to a significant degree led and controlled by Germany and so it is becoming less democratic. Here Macron is displaying no capacity for introspection and he wants to convey a notion that the brexiters sought to deceive the British people as if everyone was uncritical of the EU.

He isn't right about much, but Macron spat some truth out here. Brexit was never really there, this was never about leaving the EU this was a division project from the get go. Test run was the Scottish referendum, that went well for them, caused a massive divide in Scotland, family members arguing the whole shabbang. Then came Brexit, what do we see, the UK as a whole getting dragged into it, Northern Ireland being especially highlighted towards the tail end. Great Job say those at the City of London, now they have the whole place arguing over options that were never there. Divided we fall, meanwhile Paedophiles operate in high places, corruption is out of control, an unlawful monetary system, a fake democracy, a tyrannical system led by psychopaths. Did any of you seriously think you ever had a say? Does the Farmer ask a cows opinion on production and profits? I don't think he does.

Unlike any other member state the UK exports far more outside of the EU than in. And to expand on that further, much of what the UK's exports to Europe, is actually heading outside of the EU via Rotterdam, but counted as an EU import. The UK is a big importer from the EU, and pays a huge price in terms of membership fees, and financing of EU institutions. Strip away those payments, strip away the tariffs on imports from outside the EU, and the UK is in a very enviable position. If we had this conversation twenty years ago, things would be very different. However the world has changed and Asia is where the action is, and Asia can furnish the UK with its needs, and is in a position to offer balanced bilateral trade. Take a look around your homes, and your factories, and your offices, and you will find your goods are from outside the EU in most cases. For food, the UK has the ability to be self sufficient, however it may well be the case its cheaper to import from outside the EU. The EU will always have the ability to trade with the UK in fair balanced trade, however there will never be free trade as we know it today, as that free trade is not free at all, it comes with huge financial costs of which the public have had enough. The people are sick and tired of paying the elites membership fees and leaving the EU will ensure the working classes reap the rewards of independence.

EU was (and still is to a certain extent) an expensive endeavour for UK. The part that was perhaps seemingly silly was that they did not leave straightaway after the vote to leave EU had passed. But there might be a benefit to the postponement in terms of stability and preparation. And I don't think UK will be asking for an extension, Mr. Macron. This time, I think, UK is ready. Not sure why people say it was a lie. There was 6 months of campaigning from both sides with many televised debates as well as published debates. It was the heart of national discussion for over a year and had the highest turnout in any election in British history. The result was 52% leave. People pretend that if we could just have another referendum the UK would remain and the EU can continue becoming more centralised. Even if it did revoke article 50, no British government would ever accept any further integration from this point onward. The idea of a European super state containing the UK is dead.

Very well put. The British ought to understand that the EU public feels for British citizens and believe that the general public has been conned into this Brexit. EU general public has exactly the same problems as in the UK (dwindling public services, lower wages, immigration, increases cost of living and taxes, lower disposable incomes etc). But we're not so daft as to blame it 100% on EU. Its global financialisation (of which the City of london is the worst culpit, especially in terms of tax evasion). The great British people once revered in Europe for their common sense and pragmatism played right into their hands. Its so sad and a lose-lose for both EU and UK.

With great respect to you all in here, I don't think it's a problem for us to have 'immigrants' (although I don't like the term, sounds derisive here) from countries of Europe. I know, and have worked with some really talented people from Germany and France etc. I fully believe the problem lies with our accepting, and continuing to accept immigrants from countries outside Europe (US and Canada of course NOT included). They are a drain upon our NHS, our taxes and our resources and offer nothing but derision in our country. Look what Trump is doing in his own country. The man obviously loves his country, respect for that. When will WE have a PM who loves OUR country??

This man is so arrogant I would rather my country starve than be part of the EU. But he has forgotten one small point, we are part of the Commonwealth we can not only get all the food we need from them, but it will be better in quality, cheaper and supplied from my preferred source. No deal, no trade deal with the EU, it can go to hell.

a "neo-liberal" increasing taxes?
@FMB_Bmg

@@nathan_408 thank's for your response. That is a good and valid point, however he definitely is neo-liberal. The tax reform was supposed to affect a specific good, so that there is an equal rise for everybody - the tax doesn't grow exponentionally with peoples income. That is the first small indicator for neo-liberal politics. Also at the same time, he passed a law that doesn't tax people on their income anymore, but on real estate. That is not necessariely a bad thing, since that makes it easier for people with ambition to invest, become successful and strengthen the economy. But at the same it means lost taxes for the government - which they were trying to get back through the initial tax reform, which - as I said - affects people regardless on their income. One could interpret the situation in a way that Macron is making it easier for the rich to become richer by taxing the poorer people. That is considered as rather neo-liberal as well. And I think that is what the yellow vests movement is mainly against. At least that's my impression of it. I am "only" a philosophy student though, not an economic expert. Still I hope, I could help.

The question is will the European union respect Britain as a nation state and in good faith as neighbors conduct fair trade while acknowledging that the British people have a right to remain independent. The answer is no. The EU is not about getting along and treating its neighbors with respect. The Eu is about fundamentally bullying country's for its own benefit. Its run bye the richest of the rich for the richest of the rich.

Macron tells the cold truth eloquently. Well said. Nothing to add. I think the Brits need a good economic hiding like early 1990s or 2009 to teach them being modest with the rest of the world. For bizarre reasons, hard brexiters believe that they have and will have a strong economy that can trade under WTO rules without any impact to their economy and yet their financial services and other exports are mainly to the EU. Their imports will cost more. Sorry it is clear, the damages made to the UK are solely and only the fault of the UK as they seem to like self-harming acts.
