James Gandolfini was brilliant. Tony Soprano (James) is directly responsible for Boardwalk Empire, Breaking Bad, Dexter, Sons of Anarchy, Game of Thrones, Big Love, Six Feet Under, Carnivale, Deadwood, Justified, Homeland, and many more. All the writers/creators of the shows I just mentioned will openly admit what an inspiration The Sopranos was to them, and how it influenced them. RIP Jimmy, you were one of us.

What's particularly great about Soprano's writers is that they were informed by James Gandolfini's portrayal of Tony Soprano. There is a scene in the pilot, where Christopher tells Tony, he wants to go to Hollywood. And the scene was written in a way where Tony is supposed to be like this fatherly figure who calmly tells him that the move wouldn't be such a great idea. Gandolfini changed it up and instead he grabs Christopher by his collar in a burst of anger. So the writers picked up on that, and adjusted their writing for the Gandolfini's character. Truly something magical was happening when they were making Sopranos. A perfect cast and the expert writer team.

+pavel brodskiy The thing is, L&O and NYPD Blue didn't have the freedom The Sopranos did due to HBO being much less strict about content than ABC or NBC would ever be. It was still great though, as was The Sopranos.

His Tony accent is so realistic you'd think this voice was fake. Truly a great actor, his on screen presence is tangible, you feel Tony Soprano in the weight of his words, the subtlety of his mannerisms, and the cadence of his voice. Hearing Gandolfini talk in his regular Jersey accent (as opposed to Tony's hard Italian-American Jersey Accent) I find his voice to be very calming, he's not flamboyant like Cruise or withdrawn like Penn or Willis, he constantly looks like he is humbled by his hard work being noticed.

That may be true, but always being the "dominant one" in a scene is *not* a good thing for an actor. James Gandolfini was a big man so he always took up a lot of the frame, and he was usually cast in roles where he had to be dominant, but one of the marks of greatness in actors like Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Meryl Streep, Naomi Watts, Denzel Washington, etc., is that they could be generous, fall back and let the other actor do the heavy lifting when it's not their scene. It's about honesty, not dominance.

Just binged this whole series this past month Sept/Oct of 2021 and fell in love with the series. Did it right before the receiving news of the movie, so I def had to hurry and finish the series to watch the movie. Watched the final episode and went to KZitem to figure out the end and ended up finding out "Tony" the actor died. I had no idea the actor had died. Heartbroken to finish the series and discover the reality of his death.

@@ajaxsid9034 yes I did too.. I watched a bunch of interviews and award ceremonies, including the memorial specials for him. It helped me deal with the sadness. I'm going to rewatch the series now, can't help it, it was nice watching it everyday

Worked at hbo in marketing from 1999-2006 in the main office on 42nd and 6th in manhattan. I remember our VP pushing the show for it’s 2nd season cause it was about to blow up in its second season in Jan 2000.

I can’t believe it’s been 22 years since then, and that was his second Emmy! 23 years since the show debuted. I was 23 years old when the show ended…where does the time go?
