If I have any advice for a first time mom, it would be to thoroughly educate yourself on breastfeeding if that’s something you want to do. With my first, I thought breastfeeding was straightforward and didn’t realize how much effort and knowledge it actually takes to successfully breastfeed a baby. Highly recommend getting a lactation consultant even before baby arrives!

Feeling your child move inside and knowing you're their world is just the most amazing feeling ever. Once they're born it amplifies a lot because they rely on you 1000% it's so overwhelming at first but it really is an amazing experience. As to the peeing yourself, practice your kegals. It's really helpful for later in pregnancy and for the birth. I ended up with a csection due to me being unwell and my daughter being small. But my ideal birth would have been no epidural, gas & air only, water birth. But alas it wasnt to be.

I just wanted to throw in there a positive birth story! Like Abby I was nervous about labor and delivery, but my husband and I took a Bradley Method birth class (they're going out of popularity and might be hard to find but SO HELPFUL!). It taught us to take the word pain out of our vocabulary and replace it with words like pressure, stretching, strong sensation, etc. It also taught us methods of relaxation! Tension during labor fights what your body is trying to do as well as gives you a more uncomfortable experience. Anyways, we had our chunky little girl on march 10th of this year and had zero pain meds! Honestly with being able to relax through contractions and my husband doing TONNNS of counterpressure, I didn't really experience any pain. There were definitely strong sensations that I felt, but I wouldn't describe it as painful for me. Everyone's labor story is SO different and whether you decide to do pain meds or not, you'll do amazing! Just do your research bc sometimes epidurals can impact baby during labor and can lower moms blood pressure, as well. Matt and Abby, you guys are going to do so great and be awesome parents! It's so cool to watch your experience with pregnancy after I just went through it as well!

If you are worried about tearing, look into a pelvic floor therapist in your area. They work on getting all the muscles down there are ready to flex and stretch at the time of birth, so that you don’t tear. I am planning a natural water birth in a birth center instead of hospital! I highly recommend looking into it!!!! And if you choose something, you don’t HAVE to stick with it, if you decide you want the epidural, you can get the epidural, you would just have to be on a bed since you can’t move around once the epidural is in. But I think you should look into it since epidural drastically changes and narrows your options. Also, tearing naturally is so much better than an episiotomy!

Warm water helps A LOT with pain. Even if you dont have the baby in the water having warm water on your back during labor eases the pain. Its like the second best thing to an epidural. Plus the epidural might numb things but it drags out the labor... so there are cons and pros to everything. Like you said be sure to do your research and most importantly surround yourself with positive energy and people. I also recommend hiring a Doula, it is 100% going to make your birth experience better.

I am 13 weeks pregnant with my third and I have had epidurals with both of my prior pregnancy. I will mention you are forced to stay in bed and you need a catheter which is quite uncomfortable after removal. But compared to the pain of contracting I would still pick an epidural. But if you can handle pain well and use good amount of mediation women give birth like this all the time without an epidural! It's all personal choice! Also in my experience, contractions are a lot like VERY strong period cramps that will cover your whole abodomen and back down to the exit!!! When your contractions are around 60-90 seconds long you are almost ready, even if you haven't broken your water. You two are such a beautiful couple. You both are so lucky and blessed! Hey Abby! hope you're reading this, but if you didn't know, baby oil or just any normal oil helps sooooo much with the itching, just put it on your belly after you take bath and wash it off with normal water so it wont feel oily, reapply in the day and just use a damp cloth so it's not oily. For night take some glycerin, mix it with rosewater, 50:50 ratio and put it on your belly. It will be a bit sticky but you wont feel it at night and you'll wake up with rlly soft itchless skin. It really worked for my mom, i was like 15 when she had my third sister and i remember it clear as day lol. Hope this works for ya! Love yall and congratulations !

I intentionally had two natural births and they were such amazing experiences that I would never trade for anything. I’m not a “crunchy” person by any means but I wanted control over my labor and birth experiences- the most vulnerable and powerful time for a woman. The absolute key for successful low intervention birth is PREPARATION!!! Labor is a mind game. If you are scared of the sensations you’ll tense and it will hurt. If you prepare extensively you can remain calm and ride the waves of contractions and genuinely enjoy the experience. This also means choosing a provider and setting that is conducive to staying calm and in control in labor. Bright lights, tons of people coming in and out, being strapped to a bed, etc genuinely lead to intervention because labor can’t naturally progress in such environments. Midwifery care or more holistic gynecologists are generally the way to go for peaceful births. Best of luck to you on your parenting journey!

I can speak on a waterbirth, I had one! It was absolutely the most magical experience, but you do not get the option of an epidural. You do get the choice of “laughing gas” but that’s really the only intervention you’re allowed. She was preemie and my bp was high so almost c section twice but she decided to finally cooperate and came quick at the end... My 2nd was born in under 4hrs. By the time we decided to go to the hospital i was way further then i realized and walked in at 100% and 7cin. Was AWFUL pain and she was too big for me, she got stuck and had to be maneuvered out plus i tore so bad up inside a surgery was needed and i was so thankful i had been allowed the epidural after all! Dr told me i would have needed put out for the repairs. I am usually up walking with in 2hrs after delivery and the delivery with epidural is just so relaxing and memoriable without so much pain. God gave us technology so why not use it lol i have quit a few friends tht have went without pain relief amd love to and im proud of them! I just cant do it!! The epidural doesnt at all effect baby directly. It enters only you and only effect you. Dr explained it to me. The elidural doesnt even enter your spinal cord. Which is something i wondered and worried about. Anyway! Just follow your gut and what makes you both comfortable and happy! God will be with you whatever you choose... birth is such an amazing experience. I was honoured to be with two different friends for their babies births before i ever had children and the miracle is so so God. Love it. ♡

I think "morning sickness" can happen at any time during the day, it's just most common after during the time you need to "break your fast"

You two are gonna be such a good team. ❤️ I know all will be well. My advice for Abby as a first time Mum myself who was super, super anxious re -the whole thing is to do a “gentlebirth” course. Look up Tracey Donegan, an Irish midwife who created the course. She’s based in America now. Gentlebirth isn’t hypnobirthing it can be any kind of birth, C-section, epidural, no epidural -everything. It basically gets you into a positive mindset, there’s a big emphasis on educating partners re -how to advocate for their partner giving birth. It’s all about controlling the controllables, staying in a cocoon of calm with your baby. It would be perfect for you with your athletic background as a lot is to do with your mind, focus and aim to complete the marathon. The aim is to make feel positive about your birth and making you feel supported and in control of the decision making. Mum’s do know best and as a health care worker they should be listened to and their decisions respected all times. Choose your healthcare provider wisely. ❤️

When I was pregnant my husband gave me a back massage and a belly massage with lotion every day, he called it "baby time". Abby, just wait for those baby kicks, they are the best!

Suggestion Abby from another mama, talk to your dr about sending you to see a pelvic floor therapist! It sounds like you have some issues going on already, so getting on top of that now will be extremely helpful later in pregnancy and healing afterwards! Love you ❤️ you are doing great mama!!! 😘

Hey Abby! This is not meant to scare you in any way, just to be informative and give you an idea. So yes, labor was as painful as everyone said it to be BUT it's different. The pain you feel with labor isnt a pain that can really be compared to something, it's not a pain felt any other time, the pain is different than what you've ever felt before. It DOES hurt but in a way it doesn't feel like pain, not sure if that makes sense. It hurts but it's not really a pain, more like a sudden breath taking and nauseating pressure. Take the birthing class and know what breathing exercises to do. It will be hard to remember in the moment, trust me, but breathing correctly helps the pain so much. Make sure your taking in enough oxygen and breath. Love you Edit: Also, you are completely right! Your body was made to do this. Something important to remember though is that though your body will know what it's doing, your psychi/subconsciousness will not know what the heck is going on. You will of course know you are in labor but it will be hard for your brain to comprehend the pain and shock of what is happening. This causing a lot of first time moms to go into a panic when they feel the pain of labor for the first time, and sometimes they feel like they are dying. Again just remember to breath and remind your consciousness that this process is natural! It will be very hard, but more you breath and the calmer you try to remain the less it will hurt! This is my second pregnancy so we are going through this together girl!

Childbirth in the UK seems to be different than in the US. In the UK, a woman having a normal pregnancy (ie not high risk) often has midwives delivering her, without doctor intervention unless there is a problem. Midwives often encourage you to walk around/move around during first stage labour, and UK hospitals often have home-like birthing suites and facilities for water births. You can have an epidural if you want, and many women do, but lots don't too. If you have an epidural, I think they make you stay in bed then. Unless you've had an epidural, they encourage you to move around during delivery and not to deliver flat on your back, so that gravity helps! I had a TENS machine during the first stage and gas and air during delivery for both of my sons - it's not unbearable pain. It's bloody uncomfortable, but you don't feel like you're dying or anything. What helps is trusting your body and that it knows what to do, and relaxing and just going with it.... Don't know if this is any use, wishing you well with your pregnancy and delivery!

Y'all are doing amazing. Throw any expectations out the window, it's the most overwhelming, stressful, happiest & most emotional experience of your life becoming a parent. The best advice I ever got was "Just get through that first month & that's sorta when you start to feel like your head is above water with it all" it'll be hard at first, it just gets easier as you learn your baby boy or girl. TIK TOK WAS AMAZING HONESTLY for advice, tips & tricks, infor, etc :) love you guys, it's crazy how fast it all goes, I feel like we just had our son (10/10/21) Parker's ALREADY 4 months :)

Positive birth story for you: my pregnancy was actually super hard on me. I had my daughter at 39 weeks. I had an epidural. It was awesome!! Birth was ten times easier than pregnancy. Pregnancy lasts months. Birth lasts like hours to a few days for most people. Lol. I will say post Partum after birth was difficult but exercising and such made it easier.

You are young healthy and in good shape. Don’t risk an epidural. The pain is such a brief part of life. When you finally get to hold your baby it is all worth it. I had 3 natural home births and am so grateful for the experience.
