The Empirical Labs Fatso Jr is an outboard audio effects processor, legendary for it’s sound and quality. In this video we show you what it is and how it sounds. FATSO stands for Full Analog Tape Simulator and Optimizer. It was designed to emulate the warmth and compression that an analog tape machine gives when you put an audio signal through.
For that, the Fatso has four functions: Soft clipper and harmonic generation, warmth or high frequency saturation, transformer and tape head emulation, and classic knee compression. All these functions are accessible on the front panel, using the typical big dials which are very comfortable and easy to use, and then there are buttons and switches to operate the various functions.
More information about the functions of the Fatso Jr. can be found here:

There is a software plugin available of the Fatso, which was made by Universal Audio for their dsp platform, in collaboration with the original designer Dave Derr. we compare the two units, hard- and software in various examples. In the video, you can see when the hardware is active by the meter lights. When they are off, the plugin is active. If you want to listen to the audio in high quality, here’s a download link for all the files. Original audio without processing is also included.
