This is important right now because we are dealing with a generation that probably will not respond well if not chosen. I work in a large company and was passed over and to say it is/was demoralizing would be an understatement! I normally participate in a lot and go above and beyond. Today I had a meeting and just didn't attend because I don't care about doing something extra for a place that so obviously doesn't value me. That is how I feel.....so for everyone getting the little public pat on the back I think there are a lot of employees feeling legit resentment and pulling back.

Terribly sorry to hear you've had that experience. We don't like to encourage that in our training programs for that exact reason. One tool we try to encourage managers to use is called the B.E.T. Method and that stands for behavior, effect and thank you. It is a simple tool for positive reinforcement when managers are communicating with team members. When managers notice a behavior, let that team member know as well was say what effect it had on the team and close it off with a simple "Thank-you". So it may sound something like this: "Rebecca I noticed you gave some really good insights in the meeting today. Your comments really push the team to expand their thinking. Thank -you" Simple and effective positive reinforcement.

@@unique.leadership In my opinion, the majority of employees do not feel motivated by EOM programs....or they feel resentment. The BET sounds like antecedent/consequences or using descrite trial training in special ed. From my perspective I don't feel comfortable even working where I am right now because I was passed over so in two-months when the 401K is vested I am leaving. When these programs are not carried out properly I think they can do more harm than good.

With 31 likes, to date, this idea that having an incentive to work harder would be a bad idea misses the mark. It could be done wrong, sure, but it can be done correctly and be a good thing for morale. Morale is important for employee engagement and retention.

I agree it can be a great reward or it can be divisive. I was at a very large auto mechanic chain. I want to say Firestone but don't quote me on it because it has been years. When I looked on the wall, they had all the employees of the month from the previous calendar year for each month with their picture framed. 10 out of 12 months of the list was the same employee. The other 2 months were another person. How is it fair that only 2 employees were awarded EOM status and they have easily over 30 employees? If I was a lawyer, I would say mathematically that's discriminatory. Especially when you have multiple people working there for years on end and have never been given that status even one time yet you gave it to the same person 10 out of the 12 months in a year.

@@anthoneytolliver4442 if it's dont solely by numbers and metrics, which is the way it should be done, the people who dont win need to perform better. Employees do need the right attitude about it too.

@@RyanPoehls It's not like there were 15 employees and he won it twice that year. That's believable. Imagine there being 50 employees and the same guy wins every single month. When employees see this, it doesn't give them incentive because it would seem unattainable for them with these kind of results. It's blatant favoritism/nepotism. Something that one-sided could bring a lawsuit. Numbers don't lie. Would be the same concept as someone working for a company doing an excellent job for 20 years but they decide to promote the owner's nephew to a manager position who has been there for 3 months before they promote you to that position. I'm sure that's highly illegal and you should know this being a Human Resources Manager or whatever your title is, respectfully.
