A woman who had a child at 13 (not uncommon) and who’s child had a child at the same age could be a grandmother by her mid 20s, so by the time her grandchild was an ‘adult’ by the time’s standards (early teen) she may have been mid to late 30s which means she could still have kids if she was lucky

@@emilybarclay8831 I’m very confused by this and want to see what the Chinese records say. Lady Yang’s birth year was 579 and her grandson Helan Minzhi was born in 642 meaning she was would not been able to produce a child. Likely this could be another Lady Yang from Hongnong from his grandmother’s family

@@Junbug92 there’s a good chance this never actually happened, Wu Zetian was very heavily slandered by men of her time/her descendants time. For the grandmother and grandson to have a kid together, they had to have gotten together when he was VERY young, like 14. That would still put her at 42 having a baby assuming that there was at most a 14 year age gap between generations.

At this time 14 was considered adulthood for women, so noble girls often married as young as 10. Wu was 14 when she married the emperor who had sons who were older than her, and no one even batted an eye at this. Rich men at this time had many wives so it didn’t matter as much if one died young. A 13 year old who had a child and who’s child had a child at 13 would be 26 when they became a grandma, so when their grandchild became 13, they’d be 39 which is certainly old for childbearing at the time but not impossible

I think the fact that ancient Chinese portraits were aiming at an appropriation if the person instead of their likeness could make simulating ancient Chinese figures very difficult. Coupled with the fact that if you had money through bribery you could make the artist draw a beautiful portrait of yours if in this case if you were the empress drawing a visually appealing portrait could be a matter of life or death. I personally don’t dislike Empress Wu yeah she can seem vile killing most of her family members but it was what had be done for a female empress who didn’t even bear the surname of her predecessor to secure her grip of power On the flip side, during her reign there were more businesswomen and girls were encouraged to be educated all in all she’s a feminist I’d say. Haven’t we all seen it when there was a powerful woman in history, people all tended to demonize her because women weren’t supposed to be allowed to set foot outside? Out if all the ancient emperors even the good ones had done things similar to her or worse but nobody would bat an eye because they were men.

First of all, that was a very great video. How in the world is it possible to have a child with ones own grandma? Like actually, I'm not talking about the taboo. Even if the grandma was very young like in her thirties when the grandson was born it would still take 12+ years for that grandson to be able to father a child. By that time (almost) anyones grandma would be 45+ and back then women usually were already past menopause at that time. Lady Yang was already in her 60s by the time her grandson was born so that would be impossible. I hope this question doesn't come up as rude or anything but it just doesn't make sense to me.
@Eventide1977
2 жыл бұрын
I'm wondering the same thing.I agree something isnt adding up lol. If she was over 60 at the time of her grandson's birth she would be over 80 by the time he is old enough to father a child. The only way I could see it being remotely possible is if they were all about 16 when they became parents. Lady Yang would have been about 48 and did not quite complete menopause yet when she gave birth to her great grandson.

It's possible good nutrition and clean air kept the women fertile longer then modern women. I remember a documentary which said Chinese concubines and nobles often lived very long and vital lives. Much of it was attributed to rose petals which were consumed, along with rose hip, which both had large quantities of vitamin C.
@emilybarclay8831
2 жыл бұрын
@@TheLordSheogorath Chinese concubines lived longer because they never had to lift a finger in their lives and they had the best of the best (the favoured ones, that is, unfavored consorts died young all the time) and the rest of the population just died early like peasants in all nations did. It’s not hard to live long when you live a life of decadence
