At parent orientation for my daughters university they had a session for just the parents where the walked through all of this. Where and when to say goodbye. How to set expectations on how much to talk to the kids…is it once a day once a week etc. They talked about how to act when they came home. How to act when they called homesick. It was an amazing session that really set everyone up for success.

Part 2 should be about the reality that the majority of parents face. Those of us who didn't have perfect children with perfect grades, perfect test scores, who didn't have colleges that were recruiting them because they were talented swimmers or dancers. Many kids don't get into their 1st/2nd/3rd top choice schools. Perhaps they go to community colleges because they don't have the money to go to an overpriced university. OH, and there is the reality that many get a job after high school and help support their families. The segment would have been much better had you had a variety of parents with different circumstances.

our 4 kids are close in age & all left the SAME SUMMER!! 🤪 (2 university students, 2 long term missions on other side of globe…only one stayed in-state a few hrs away) imagine the empty nest whiplash we experienced! It wasn’t an easy season of transition but it’s healthy for everyone to let them fly when the time is right. The pride & joy we experience while also stepping out of that season can be quite the rollercoaster! and can someone please tell me why all this has to happen when most of us are hitting Perimenopause/menopause?! It’s definitely a time in life to offer ourselves a lot of compassion and grace and prayer and also be there for one another. 💕💕

Dominique & Liz, I so enjoyed the podcast . My daughter is an only child and you wonder if you have been a good parent, however once their grown and your child is intelligent, loving and thoughtful of others and still you enjoy each other's company. Then you're confident you raised them well. You both are loving and caring parents. Bless you both.

I can so much relate to this. My daughters graduated many many yrs ago ( ages are 45 and 43). But I can so much relate to this.the hardest was with my oldest, ATM and college station is only 1:30 hrs. But it was one of the hardest things to do. I had to take her by myself bc my husband was working, and it was fun and exciting arranging and decorating her room, but at the end of the day, the pain of saying good by was horrible. It was raining very hard on my drive back home, and I had to get off the road bc I was crying as hard as it was raining. Second daughter went to college two yrs later here to UH , she lived in an apartment, but knowing that she was in town made a big difference, even though we didn’t see her that much. It is such an adjustment, but it is wonderful to see the changes in them as to how much they grow. Hang in there Dominique your son is doing great and he will one visit, and maybe you going to see him one day for lunch would be great for you. Many changes in your life, but your faith and strength will keep you strong. This was a great podcast. ❤😊

Mom of 4 here. Never thought this would happen, but 4 out of 4 do not use their college education that cost hundreds of thousands of dollars for all of us. My honest opinion as I look back during those years is that college is overrated. A "keeping up with the Joneses" mentality. As brilliant as they all are, they found their way themselves without using their college education. Let's stop putting pressure on 17 and 18 year old youngsters to know their future, pick their path and go into huge debt. I would suggest they go to work, maybe even move and find a job in a field they might be interested in. Once they do that, they might change their mind, they might love what they do, they may go down a path that they didn't even know they were interested in. And then they may decide that college is a must and who knows may get some help and encouragement from an employer. Who can justify $250k to learn life lessons???

Exactly - a big fancy college does not guarantee a successful career - especially if they are indoctrinated. Skilled trades and community colleges all the way. Do we ever go see professionals and ask where they went to college?

While I didn’t experience a great deal of separation anxiety during my sons study abroad YEAR in college, what snapped me out of any I did feel was learning during orientation how many parents intended to join their students abroad. I was so unaware of that intended level of parental involvement and so embarrassed for their students. The orientation staff tried to discourage parents and many had these trips booked BUT let me tell you that experience changed my parenting style permanently.

What students want their parents helicoptering on the university campus with them? Perhaps parents should meet their own changing milestones and embrace your young adult child's independence so they can meet their milestones. Enabling adult children to be dependent on parents is borderline infantilizing and enabling your children to be overly dependent on parents is not a good look. Many options vocationally which do not include college. Internships, apprenticeships with Apple, Google, trades. Some may prefer to work in a field that interests them or go into entrepreneurial business pursuits and College could very much not be something that they require in the traditional manner. I know many people who wish their parents had saved their money as they went into their own business pursuits and only completed the college degree for their parents. It actually set them back from a business standpoint. I know many parents will cringe at this. Sorry.

What a great opportunity for parents and children who are able to afford college. I work with so many young people who are not going simply because their parents could not afford it. I've seen many smart intelligent young people miss this opportunity and have often wondered what happened to them as they moved into the big world.

What can a prospective applicant learn by sleeping over in a dorm room? I would encourage my child to have a probing conversation with a department head to find out exactly what to expect when they speak their mind in the classroom. Will their 1st amendment rights be honored?? There is good reason to ask, given what's being reported in recent years. Are the professors pressured to toe-the-line with "safe space" practices? This podcast discussion seems to ignore the dumb-down-and-indoctrinate reality that the college "education" has become.

Dominique, thank you for this podcast. What a difference between Middle Class parents and Working Class parents. What devotion to their kids. I work in public education and after 17 years of teaching, I can sadly say that most working class parents don't care about their kids attending college, not even a trade school for 18 months. The problem of education is not education, but irresponsible parenting, drug abuse, and family neglect. If I tell a parent they have to save for college since their kid is in elementary, I will risk being insulted. I hope not to offend anybody with this. It is just the truth.
