Glad you mentioned ants Tilly cos thats what i get a lot of here if i use a baseless basic compost bin. For some reason if i use a 44 gallon drum, basess also, i don't seem to get ants. Usually i will leave the drum(s) for at least a year, but probably 2-5 years !! I like that your bin is square shaped. Very good that you showed the empty bin view also. Accent is also nice to hear😁🙋

Hi John, thank you very much! I know it sounds a bit strange, but I really enjoy making compost, I love testing out different ways to speed up the process and different 'recipes' ... it's quite addictive!! 😃

@@rootofavalon3841 yes I am similar. I look at materials as great ingredients. Everywhere I go I find something to add. I just recently got a worm farm from a trade so that is similar. Kitchen scraps from the local soup kitchen are like gold now. I can only repeat myself and others that your presentation was interesting, entertaining, informative, and heart warming🙋😁

i have a dalek bin with open bottom so that worms can get in, worm poo is the good stuff lol. I actually don't mind if ants get in there, the compost comes out nice and fluffy with them. What i'll do is take the lid off a few days before i'm gonna empty it, once the birds spot them they abandon ship. When i empty it i'll remove the top few inches first and put to one side to put back in and help the next lot get going. By doing this i can then just lift the dalek out of the way completely and no problem working it from top down with a garden fork.. If its for a bed i'll just chuck it in as is but if its for buckets/pots i'll sieve it and seperate the compost from the mulch. I also have the pathway down the middle of my greenhouse made from twigs and old rotten wood, i'll let that rot away and use as mulch and just keep topping up. I also have buckets running down either side of the greenhouse on the outside and fill in all the gaps inbetween the buckets with the thicker branches as a stage 1 of decomposition, when i can break it up easily with my bare hands its ready for the greenhouse floor. The natural soil in my garden isn't very good (new build) so having home made woodchips really helps balance out the acidity. I also make my own trellises and canes by harvesting a nearby willow tree as they are nice and straight, fast growing and although only a soft wood contribute nicely to my woodchip production

I am jealous, I've had the hotbin composter since March and have had to recycle material that was impacted and anaerobic from the bottom. I've followed the instructions from hotbin but I never seem to be able to get it quite right. Too wet most of the time, then increased the shredded cardboard and woodchip.. Then it develops a bone dry tract down through the centre of it😢😢it's been a lot of work to date.

Try increasing the nitrogen content, if you buy Hoof and horn fertiliser, you can add a layer of that on cardboard every now and then, that will get it cooking
