In which Bruce Kania harvests thousands of minnows from our minnow traps at Floating Island International's Research Center at Shepherd, MT. Harvest is essential to permanently remove phosphorus from water. If not harvested, life forms (such as minnow, other fish, aquatic plants, bullfrogs) die off and contribute to phosphorus build-up in the sediments, eventually leading to Harmful Algae Blooms (HABs), of which phosphorus is the limiting nutrient or chief cause. Orthophosphate, associated with fertilizer, is the most potent form and most frequently-found in water. Harvesting can return water back to health, as well as prevent problems "downstream" .
