This movie catapulted Amy Adams to the mainstream, she's such a treasure. No one else could've played this role, I can't wait for the sequel soon enough. Also this was when Disney poked fun at themselves, it's a beautiful satire that's also a loving homage to the classic Disney films. Plus this film had the legendary Alan Menken doing the songs as he did for many Disney classics, it's an excellent formula. Susan Sarandon as the evil queen, she slayed.

The telenovela has a bunch of references in one: The female soap star “Angela” (so named for Angela Lansbury, who voiced Mrs. Potts in Beauty and the Beast) is played by Paige O’Hara, the voice of Belle. “Angela” is arguing with a man named “Jerry” (Jerry Orbach voiced Lumiere) because she’s having an affair with a man named “Ogden” (David Ogden Stiers voiced Cogsworth). This soap opera scene is scored with music from Beauty and the Beast.

I love how Edward's step-mother follows the classic "evil step-mother" trope, while Giselle proves that there are wonderful step-mothers as well (and Nancy would've been great too). I also love that neither Edward nor Nancy puts their own feelings above someone else's well-being. It's more important to both of them that Giselle is okay than staying with their current partners. And, of course, I love that all four of them find happiness, as well as Morgan and Nathaniel. This is such a fantastic film. It never gets old.

Can I just say that Nancy is the real mvp here? She was waiting for this guy for apparently literally years but still respected his boundaries and decision to not rush anything. When Giselle popped up she had a good reason to be upset about how he handled that situation and suspicious about things but still ended up being very understanding and trusting towards him to the very end. Waiting for someone for so long and tolerating so many things while being on top of that antagonized by his daughter as becoming the “evil stepmother“ although the kid didn’t even get to know her at all? I would have not been so kind about the whole deal at all. They did Nancy really dirty. Especially at the end during the ball. I feel like the decision to make her run away with Prince Edward was only done so it’s not so obvious that Robert and Giselle weren’t quite fair and mindful towards them. Also, sorry to break it to the kid but technically Giselle is going to be her stepmother now and Nancy has the princess status. Kinda ironic.
@artsysabs

I think she realized how Giselle made him better and as much as it would be heartbreaking as romantic as she is I definitely buy that Nancy would love him enough to let him go once she realizes he has a connection with someone new instead of trying to force him to stay I’m definitely not denying they were not fair to her in the slightest but I can definitely buy her characterization and it didn’t feel too sudden like just oh we need a solution. And it would have felt worse and more sudden if she hadn’t been the one to tell Robert to kiss Giselle. To me her telling him that was her acknowledging she wasn’t the one that made him happiest and her willingness to let him follow it

I mean I get what Robert was saying about being worried about his daughter being sensitive and not wanting her to be hurt when faced with a disappointment, but at the same time I always thought that was a bit selfish, no self-centred of his wanting her to not read fairy tales, always gave me a feeling of 'So your happy ever after didn't work out the first time round, so you have to spoil everyone else's belief in happy ever after? You want your daughter to grow up without belief that she could be happy in her life?' And if you're going to drop a bombshell like 'You're getting a stepmother' it's kind of a better idea to give your daughter the book she wants rather than the book you think she should be reading (and is radiation poisoning really appropriate reading material for a girl her age?)

The balance between his unhappiness and the belief that there was no such things as a happy ever after and the princesses spunkyness and happy attituted helped them grow on each other. The princess had an over abundance of unrealistic happiness that helped the new yorker man grow and fill in his happiness he was missing. They were like the perfect ying yang relationship coming together to create harmony. I liked the characters and how they adapted as they got used the real world. They each played their roles very well and kept it entertaining. Omg as someone who grew up in nj and visited nyc plenty of times myself I can say that is a pretty accurate depiction during work hours. Especially during lunch hour when people are going out to eat or having business lunches. Then at night it does get less crowded and safe like when the princess was robbed. Continue reading below for a more controversial view | | | V Id also like to point out this movie having a great way to show woman empowerment. It new the difference between a fictional cartoon princess romance and a real life relationship. It grew steadily showing more of it in the princess as she adapted to the real life world. She took the time to get help from others in a new crazy environment where all she knows in her fictional land doesnt really apply. She didnt get too upset when things didnt go her way. She didnt go crazy on the pizza baker when he tried to kill her chipmunk friend!! Which in real life wild animals, especially rodents are not allowed in any food industry establishements. She reversed the role of the victim to the savior near the end of the movie really well too. It didnt need some big action muscular heroin to come across as empowering. It kept the romantic side of things and the fictional disney princess sweetness while also making her less useless. It reversed the roles of the damsel in distress to the gentlemen in need in a very good way. The characters balanced each other out which id say is actually a good way to think about relationships too. If one person does everything in the relationship while the other reaps the benefits it doesnt really seem fair or like a healthy relationship most of the time. A marriage is like a compromise on ever lasting love and care for each other in my opinion. All in all id say this movie despite being a comedic take on disney princess movies is much better than some of the newer empowerment junk I see coming out these days.

The song they dance to at the ball, called So Close, took heavy inspiration from the title song from Beauty and the Beast.

How they did the transfer from the two artistic mediums is very interesting and cool

This movie is cute and the song So Close is very relatable to me and my partner because we spent six years in a long distance relationship (but luckily now we’ve been together for almost a year) And lately new Disney movies haven’t been exciting me but I’m looking forward to Disenchanted!

I remember when I first saw this movie as a kid. I’m pretty sure I started going through puberty the moment I saw Patrick Dempsey in that prince outfit.

6:53, which was of course the joke. And I would say that they did it better than Frozen did given in Frozen every single character repeatedly tells Princess Anna that it’s a bad idea to marry a man she just met to the point where it became overly heavy-handed whereas here it was exaggerated to absurdity for the sake of humour and as such managed to land the same point without sermonizing

Fun fact: Susan Sarandon said that when she saw herself dressed up as the old hag she scared herself.

One of my favourite movies of all time. I got into this and Hairspray (the 2007 version) at about the same time, and they're very very different but also they seem to hit a lot of the same notes, so to speak... AND it has James Marsden in an entirely different but awesome role.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who thought of King Kong when the wicked queen was on top of the tower.
