My all time favorite line from Harrow was after Jimmy tells Neary that it's NOT a confession, Harrow puts the revolver in Neary's mouth and finishes the sentence and says, "It's a suicide note!" and BAM! Loved Harrow, hands down best written character in any drama TV Show! He was both a kind and sweet man AND a fkin sick sociopath. I don't know how that works, but he was somehow both. A Cold blooded killer yet a loving "Father" figure, like he was to Tommy.

I don’t necessarily think he was a sociopath as much as a person who became so desensitized to death and brutality that it was an every day thing for him. For richard murder is the only profession in which he felt he belonged. Because of the war that’s all he knew. I wish we could have seen more of him in this show :(
@FilthTribeFTP
4 ай бұрын
@@minivan5908 totally valid point. I guess it's extremely possible for someone who fought and lived through WW1 to become so indifferent to killing, that he felt nothing killing civilians, whether they deserved it or not. WW2 may have had more casualties, but it was also twice as long and had far more players involved. WW1 was far more deadlier in the sense that trench warfare was simply a death sentence for most on the front lines, and the average life expectancy for them was much shorter than those fighting in WW2. Not to take away from either, both were terrible.

Boardwalk Empire, though billed as primarily as a film of old-time gangsters, for me was more of a sophisticated depiction of the post World War One historical period. Veterans, and the challenges they and their comrades faced, are prominent characters and elegantly portrayed during this period. As a fellow veteran, I think you might agree that most viewers could only relate to Richard Harrow''s horrific battle wound. Despite the graveness of the visible wound, the unseen wounds of war are often just as grave and lasting. Trying to adequately relate to anyone who hasn't been there is a daunting and troublesome task. In my opinion, this series succeeded

Life is a journey. The character of the war veteran Richard Harrow developed extraordinarily from beginning to end. Returning home shattered physically, his scars emotionally and psychologically were even more debilitating than his horrific facial wound. Yet, the brave soldier still shouldered his burdens yet rose and carried on, despite what at times seemed insurmountable odds. A complex, but beautiful character. On one hand, a deadly and implacable warrior; on the other, sensitive, modest, loyal and someone who deeply appreciated the gift of life and the beauty of the world around him. Yeah, "beautiful character", that's probably his entrance to hell, what you don't see on screen, is his "relatives" turning into hellspawn

After mr. Harrow died I didn't even want to watch the show anymore. Truly a remarkable character. If Jimmy & harrow lived thru the show it would have been the up there with the sopranos in greatness. Season 5 sucked so bad...

I remember seeing this for the first time and I was so happy that he was back with his girl and Jimmy's kid but then when it showed his whole face I was like OH NO!! And then the cut scene to him under the boardwalk or w.e I was so sad he was my guy! I loved him and Jimmy!!

It wasn't Jimmy's kid. It was his wife and son. Jimmy's kid kills Nucky in the finale.

This one one of 2-3 scenes that made me actually cry watching, Richard was literally ride or die through humility and understanding his time in the war was one of many times he would have to revisit a monster inside him but instead of his country, for his “friends” and companions is as just as uncomfortable of a time

This actually pissed me off. Here this guys a raging badass, used throughout the seasons as muscle and a gun, able to hold his own in a world of gangsters and Special Agents like Nelson VanAlden. He tells a story of waiting many days to outlast a hidden enemy sniper, just to get that one shot, placing his bullet right into the enemie sniper's cheek. Hes an experienced war vet, a battle hardened sniper thats a hell of a shot, yet fails miserably at what he does best, sniping, and it costs him his life. He was one of my favorite characters, and you really wanted him to get to that farm house. (Its been years, was it Wisconsin or some shit?)

Salute to a true soldier… one of the best characters in the history of television. The writers here illustrated with one character the duplicity or two faces of all the other characters. Using two faces literally to identify the duality and hypocrisy of man demonstrated in the other main characters was genius. Yet the man with the literal two faces was the purest and truest of them all. WOW!
