About this visit!
The John G Munson arrived Duluth August 02, 2024 for the 12th time this season. Arriving at a speed of 6.4 Kts at 15:06 in the afternoon. Their holds were full of limestone for the Duluth C Reiss Dock up river. In the Video you can look over the bridge down into the holds they have the hatch covers off of to see what the cargo looks like in shipment. They pulled into the C Reiss dock for the last time at 16:46 and began the discharging. Only 18.7 hours later they completed the discharge and departed the dock August 03 at 11:30 in the late morning. Ironically I do have that departure as well! Check it out when I Post it, full of industrial action! After departing C Reiss, they sailed down river and pulled into their Home Port Dock of CN Duluth to load Iron Ore. They arrived "home" home at 12:17 and got to work on loading the ore pellets. 12.6 hours later they finished that task, departing the CN dock August 04 at 00:54 in the dark night! I was not there for this departure! They pulled out of Duluth at 02:07 after spending 35 hours in Port. Heading to Toledo OH to deliver the ore.
C.Reiss Coal Duluth Terminal
The C. Reiss Coal Company handles Eastern coal, limestone, and other cargoes that ships unload at this dock. The company itself has been operating since the early 1920’s as a coal handler. The limestone that is delivered to this dock is used for driveways, landscaping, construction projects, and the sugar beet industry in Western Minnesota.
Dock History: This dock was first built and occupied by the Island Creek Coal Company in 1913. At the time, it was one of four different coal docks that operated in this part of the harbor. There were also four different lumber companies that operated wharves and sawmills just to the north; you can find remains of these lumber operations to this day.
Due to increasing water levels that cause annual flooding at the Duluth Port in Minnesota, C. Reiss Company needed to relocate its shipping operations to Superior, Wisconsin. The facility in Superior had been unused for the last 30 years and much of it needed to be rehabilitated-our team was there to help.
We completed natural resources inventories for the site as well as complex wetland and waterway permitting. This included wetland filling, stormwater pond construction, sea wall repair, dredging, an artificial wetland exemption request, construction site notice of intent permitting, and cultural and endangered resources reviews. We also performed habitat assessments for the state threatened sea-side crowfoot. Following our work, this project received Federal Maritime Administration and Wisconsin’s Harbor Assistance Program grant funding of over $10 million-as a result, we have been able to complete design plans for the total redevelopment of the site, including civil and dredging construction plans.
Upon completion, C. Reiss will transfer operations from their impacted Duluth site to the newly redeveloped Superior site, ultimately setting up the dock for years of use and expansion.
