Climate change protests drew hundreds of thousands worldwide on Sept. 17 under the slogan #EndFossilFuels. But although transitioning to cleaner energy is an admirable goal, there are many severe environmental problems--including the increasingly obvious anthropogenic changes in the global climate--that even entirely eliminating fossil fuel use will not by itself solve. Animal agriculture, deforestation (which has multiple causes, including animal agriculture), overfishing, and the general trashing of our oceans and other bodies of water with a huge variety of pollutants, contribute hugely to climate change as well as other environmental problems. And at the root of it all is capitalism. The means of production must be brought under democratic control, and development must be carefully planned; otherwise, the relentless drive toward ever-greater profits will ultimately make the planet uninhabitable for our species.
