What I find so remarkable about this episode is that, in this final scene, the audience has learned all the "language" necessary to follow along with everything Picard is saying. Meanwhile his bridge crew, including Data, are absolutely baffled by his words. One of TNG's best for sure.

It's even better when you watch it again and now you can understand what the tamarians say at the start of the episode. Even more impressive because they use some phrases that don't get an explicit translation later on, and some are contractions/shortforms. But by now the episode has taught you how they think and you can follow their internal conversations easily.

"Picard and Dathon at Elladril" is the most important line in the episode to me. We don't just learn how the Tamarian language works through Picard and Dathon's experience, we see that the events of the episode itself have become a part of the Tamarian mythology, with that line being the creation of another expression within their language. It's just a remarkable piece of writing, showing how stories become myths which become language again.

While I agree with your praise for the episode, the UT was hardly useless. Without it there would have been just noise. When they close their eyes and lower their heads, when hearing "Shaka, when the walls fell" breaks my heart. The way he says "Mirab, with sails unfurled" is the perfect tone - in a joyful way it would mean something so different. I think Picard putting into perspective about how the leader was willing to die just for the chance at communication, was what really got me. @VSValeant

I'm guessing the command for maximum shields is only given in battle situations. But this is also a science vessel, that does peaceful exploration. During those times, I'm guessing shields are at lower setting, enough to deflect radiation, small debris... It's probably draining a lot of energy to keep them at full all the time, so I think they adjust the shields to the situation. I'm not sure, I'm just guessing here.
@TakaComics
2 жыл бұрын
I guess when they say “shields up,” it’s a standard setting, but when a command like “maximum shields” goes out it means redirect power from other systems. They usually divert power in emergencies to get shields back to full, or distribute certain shields to parts of the ship. Shields up - Most vulnerable parts of the ship defended the most, other parts are modulating, redirecting to vulnerable parts. Used for standard situations where the intent is unknown. Shields at full - all parts of the ship at 100% shields, all protected equally. Used in battle when the next attack can hit anywhere. Maximum shields - 120% or more, non-essential systems go offline. Used when they know the shields won’t hold long under standard conditions. Also, scientific applications: Shields are for normal dangerous areas, full shields are for areas where there would be more radiation or heat, maximum would be for things like flying close to a star or something.
@Raz.C
Жыл бұрын
@@VSValeant It's the job of the deflector (separate from shields) to deflect debris. Without it, warp speed is suicidal. So I don't think that's it. My guess would be that giving the command and raising shields would have the shields at a nominal strength. Since they're stationary, however, it would be feasible to divert power from propulsion to shields and to raise the shield strength, which wouldn't ordinarily happen without the order to raise shields to 'maximum strength.' But I'm also guessing, so I might be way off the mark, too...

One of the all-time greatest TNG episodes ever! Thanks for posting this clip. I encourage everybody to check out the entire episode. Those of us who are lucky enough to be forced to study mythology may rightfully wonder why. Often times it might seem as if our teachers have difficulty justifying such study. But this episode shows exactly how the study of texts at the foundation of our culture might very well help us to work through our encounters with other cultures in very concrete and practical ways. Unlike the Enterprise crew, we may not be encountering cultures from distant galaxies any time soon. But our own world gets smaller and smaller every day; and it is very likely that within our lives most of us will encounter people from other cultures that may be as confounding to us as the Tamarian culture was to the Enterprise crew. Now more than ever we need help navigating those strange waters and negotiating the new relationships that result. Study of math and science has given us the technology that has made the world so small. But it is only the study of the humanities -- of literature and comparative religion and history -- that will help us all learn how to get along in our new, strange and wonderful world.

This makes sense in a way. Their language wasn't that complicated, but in the world of universal translators, such art may be lost to many, not lost in knowledge but in experience. Engineers make up there own language. Even today, we use words and phrases in ways that make no sense according to classical language. It's actually a serious issue when having technical documents translated into another language, as the literal translation often makes no sense. One example from my own experience. We have a manual for a power plant translated into Spanish. One of the guys on my team was reading it over, and in the section that explains how to light off the plant, it read in Spanish to turn the plant lights off. It was not an error, it was just the literal translation of the words, by someone that did not understand technical English.

Probably something like this. (explosions rock the Enterprise and sparks fly from the engine room) Scotty: "Crewman! The engineers at Chernobyl, when the reactor went critical." Crewman: "Apollo, warning Houston of a problem." Scotty: "Kirk, when the laws of physics couldn't be changed." Crewman: "Elon, when he jury-rigged the Mars Lander!" Scotty: *nodding, then turning to the communicator* "Captain! Lev (1), when he beat the equipment!" Kirk: "Mr. Sulu, the choppers, when Saigon fell!" (Enterprise goes to warp and gets the hell away from whatever the crisis was). (1) Lev is the name of the Russian cosmonaut from Armageddon whose most famous line was "dees eez how we feex tings, on R-r-russian Space Station!"

I don`t think many people actually realize that despite them having a weird reputation due to their funny linguistic, their ship is notticeably more powerful than the Federation Flagship. Sometimes I think about Voyager like how easier their journey could be on Galaxy class and then I remember this. of course there are Borg and others but those are like "regular"

I feel like the Intrepid class was one of the best vessels to get stranded in the Delta quadrant. While it doesn't have the raw firepower of the Galaxy class, it's very fast and efficient, appropriate for conserving resources on a long journey. The Galaxy class is notably weak compared to others of its weight class and not at all maneuverable at sublight speeds. I feel like it would've been carved up quickly in the Delta quadrant.
@Levi_Skardsen

The Intrepid class was designed for long-term exploration so it was perfectly suited to the situation. I think a Galaxy class would've struggled a lot more with energy concerns given how massive it is.

I would have to place this episode in a top 10 of at least Trek and possibly in a top 10 across most of the sci-fi genre. In fact, it might even cross into top 3 Trek as “Darmok and Jalad at Tanagra” is almost a universal representation of those who have watched, and understand, TNG.
@RustBunny
2 жыл бұрын
I do agree that this was one of the better episodes that continues the legacy of the original series' mission and TNG's continuing mission for the Enterprise, to seek out new life and new civilizations. It's hard to sustain a story for long where characters cannot understand each other, even with a third party to translate for each side of the conversation. The Universal Translator is a convenient plot device to help us with our suspension of disbelief, while most other shows rarely give a meaningful explanation as to why and simply go forward with the story, which I am fine with. Movies like Robinson Crusoe On Mars or Enemy Mine did a good job at doing something with overcoming barriers to communication, while the Stargate franchise sometimes explored it in episodes like Enemy Mine (which was named because of that movie). However, most TV shows and movies don't usually put a lot into it beyond some words or phrases, else we'd need a good chunk of time just learning how to interact with each other.
