I had dark moments in my software job, struggling with the idea that I needed to understand everything and master the finest methods before starting to code. You quickly learn to avoid that trap, start something and go look for information as problems arise. But it goes with accepting that you will make mistakes and maybe throw away multiple iterations, which I think is the main reason why we tend to delay action.
7 ай бұрын
Fun story, I work on a backend written in javascript. Not typescript, just ES6 vanilla javascript. Sometimes people criticize the language choice because they know it's slower than a lower-level language. This knowledge ignores the fact that the language is nowhere close to being the bottleneck. It's all our resources (APIs, database) and our caching which affect performance; switching to Rust or Golang would make no significant impact in the face of these things. Type safety is another concern that comes up. We've had maybe 2 type errors briefly reach production - with proper documentation and good static analysis it's actually quite rare for these "issues a strongly typed compiler would catch" to actually occur. Even though it sounds insane to use a vanilla javascript backend in 2023, the empirical evidence seems to suggest that it simply doesn't matter. Knowledge suggests we should rewrite the backend, but experience informs that it would be very costly for a minuscule benefit.

@@junba1810 To be honest composition is probably more tricky than coding, as you don't have an objective evaluation of the quality of your work once you've eliminated obvious mistakes. So maybe get a coach, or at least get a few people involved in regular listening sessions and use their feedback... Personally I don't feel like I have a calling for making my own music so I kinda gave up on composition. But the few times I tried to write down something cool that popped up in my improvisations I quickly got bored with it and couldn't tell if it was indeed worth keeping. Usually at this point there is only one solution: leave it aside for a day or two, go back to it with a fresh ear. What blows my mind is how people could compose for orchestra without modern software to get a realistic feel of the end result.

As someone with ADHD I felt this to my core. My psychiatrist even said it's unusual I did well in school, but I love learning. I've spent a great deal of time and money learning a great many things, but never really using them all that much. "How will I use this today?" also resonates; it's something I had to learn to do, and I'm pretty good at it, now. "No, I won't use that" and so I stop. Usually... Perfectionism, my old friend. Perfectionism is just another term for fear of rejection when you boil it down. This one is a struggle I still face, though it's lessening as I actually just sit down and do a thing. A lot of times I'm writing for a singer and use that as a stopping point; "can she sing to this?" yes: finish, you're done for now. No: okay, you're allowed to keep at it, for now. Thanks for sharing! I like when someone's words forces me to think or analyze. And realizing that finishing something is a bigger dopamine hit for me than learning something new XD

Oh man, I feel this at my core. As an artist, I’m terrified of releasing my ideas to the world, so I use the need to learn as a shield. Every time I try to MAKE something, I am attacked by the part of my brain that wants to defend me, using the same attacks it’s trying to defend me from. And as I continue to learn but not do, I sharpen my sense of nitpicking. I start seeing the “””flaws””” in others’ works, and that sharp eye is then weaponized against myself by the defense brain. Aside from the invaluable idea of learning with a purpose, I have to say I've found that creating a folder/tasklist for myself where I dump different research paths for later really helps me to focus. Finding, say, an interesting topic like "motor sound synthesis" and creating a folder to dump links I encounter in, knowing that, if I need to do it, or I happen to be free and interested, I can resume my studying on that topic at anytime - that really soothes my anxiety that I'm gonna somehow lose this information.

How are you organizing these paths? I typically dive down a rabbit hole on my phone more than my laptop. I'll sometimes make notes and have 100+ tabs open, until I get sick of it and delete them all. But I haven't really had a way to neatly store each individual path adequately.

@@C4PTAINinsano I always recommend using obsidian! It's a "Personal wikipedia" type program that is free and opensource, and it stores data in a very transparent way - you can easily migrate if you so choose (unlike things like trello or ToDo which I used to use for stuff like that). There even are some powerful addons that can support a lot of different workflows. I adore excalidraw because it lets you put text, images, doodle all over them, make schemes, even put youtube videos right in it. So the way I use Obsidian for this is something like this: - I set up a "Research" folder inside Obsidian - For example, when studying I come across a video that'd sidetrack me, but that looks promising - "RECREATE THE SOUND OF ___ IN BITWIG GRID!" - I create a note (or an excalidraw drawing!) in my Research folder, I name it something like "Bitwig Grid Sound Design" and I place a link there - If I find any future videos that fall somewhere in that category, or if I succumb and do some shallow watching/clicking on similar stuff - I put that in the same note/drawing. It's very intuitive and fuzzy but it's the best way I have. (replied to you yesterday but it never came through cuz youtube :c, sorry if double pinged you!)

This. It's one of the reasons why I started taking notes digitally in my college studies - and frankly, regret not doing that earlier (I still intend to scan and OCR my earlier notes, though OCR on hand-writing is still a headache for computers I think). You see, the common issues with many fields of studies (I'm studying Electronic Engineering, but I think that's irrelevant here) is that you get stuffed with a lot of knowledge that you don't even know if you'll ever use; it's impossible to assess that at the early stage of institutional learning. But then you find yourself needing that knowledge, and it's important to be able to go back to it. Main thought: When doing that (writing folders), ALWAYS name them so that you can easily Ctrl+F them in the future (e.g. describe context and such). What seems obvious at the moment may very much not be in the few years you'll actually come to use that knowledge.

My personal area of practice is graphite based art, which I've done for several decades now. Everything you brought up here applies just as well and hits hard right at the core (esp in my case.) I suppose it has a strong connection to the axiom "Perfect is the enemy of good enough".As in chasing perfection can (and most often does) result in the safe and comfortable decision of waiting far too much before releasing a lot of ones creative output. So there's another axiom that says "To be good at anything, we must be willing to be bad at it for a while". Bravery, my friends, bravery.

This is SO much more applicable to just music, I think a lot of us here who aren't musicians by got recommended this video still left a lot more inspired than if we hadn't watched it otherwise. Cheers!

In truth, when I've tried to learn about writing or develop my understanding by reading novels, nothing has ever really come of it. Whereas when I've yoloed myself into doing a "project," often on something I'm either ignorant of or have a very incomplete understanding, I sometimes get uncannily good results seemingly as a weird consequence of my limited understanding. But then the problem comes that when I try to stop being a student, I get cold feet and go back to learning. When I try to learn, I boil with passion and have to start a project. The harder I try to control anything the more it insists on escaping my grasp. It's reached the point where I'm disillusioned of the feeling that I ever had control and the creative spirit just does whatever it wants.

I am a university student, about to graduate (not in music) and this really resonates with me. I have been in school for a very long time and yet there is a part of me that feels like I have learned nothing at all, because it's all just learning. I have no job, I have not applied my knowledge yet, and at this point I don't even know what I will be able to apply should I be lucky enough to get hired after I graduate.

I am a computer science and math student in my last semester of undergrad, this is definitely true especially for computer science. For mathematics, it's a bit for complicated, it's hard to ever feel like you are ready to be a research mathematician and it usually takes a solid 8 years of learning before you can even attempt to produce anything meaningful, but application and creation doesn't have to be producing groundbreaking research. It can be trying to solve problems just outside your comfort zone without looking up the solution, or applying a bit of mathematics to an everyday phenomenon that most people overlook. I love theory, but theory combined with application and experimentation creates the strongest catalyst for growth.

I faced this exact problem when I was learning to produce. I would watch hours and hours of tutorials, download new plug ins, research about which DAW was the best. In the end, I never got around to creating and sharing music. Years later, I now realise that this same concept applies to pretty much anything. Whether you're learning a language, how to code, or anything else, what matters is putting yourself out there and using that feedback to iterate and improve yourself. I'm now trying to learn through action rather than passive study, I've been finding it to be more effective so far.

This is universally applicable. I found this message very thought provocative in my particular area of endless learning (but not enough application and contribution) as a Christian, namely theology and walk with God.

this video was a "come to Jesus" moment. Quickly convicts me of being a KZitem learning addict. Have been for years ever since I got the Premium subscription. The idea of 2 hours of application for every 1 hour of learning scares me...and that's exactly why I'll attempt it as my primary change in 2024. I can't imagine how productive 2024 will be if I make that one switch.

Software developer here (or wannabe at least). This video comes at a time for me in which i'm struggling with what you just described. I only had to change music to code and you were talking about my current problem, thank you. The Algorithm choose wisely for me and showed me this amazing piece of advice/content. I will just do that, close my browser, and go and make some heartfelt "music". thank you.

This obsession to learning I'm still battling now after a decade. It's made me way more of a recluse and more anxious in general. I think the more you know the more there is to worry about

This is well said. I think it also goes beyond the idea of learning (it might be a part of a wider matter.) The feeling of being prepared, having/being more than enough, makes us believe we are in control over our lives in such a way that nothing can surprise us, e.g., "I will learn two more programming lanuages so I don't fall behind" or "I need three more degrees just in case I lose my job". Many perfectionists know it too well. Unfortunately, this mode of survival makes us waste invaluable time on things that we'll likely never need. As someone's mentioned here, be ambitious and attentive BUT do not obsess over learning/hoarding/preparing more than you need. It's all about maintaining the balance between being resourceful and having fun with your life. Stay productive but don't let it ruin your life.

It's good to treat it like learning a sport. A tennis player may read theory books, watch other sports players etc.. but 80% of the time they are playing the sport in order to improve. I recently realised that with artistic pursuits such as music or drawing, it's very similar. Definitely needed this video as I got back into art recently and have been wondering how to make progress, realised that studies won't stick if I don't apply it in a project

Stellar advice! I recently started practicing Karate and I got hooked on it immediately. But for all the new katas and techniques I look up, there are many hours of practicing the basic punches and kicks. It is sad that our education system is just trying to get us to learn and totally forgets that practice is mandatory to actually master something. Having concrete goals like getting a new belt in Karate or finishing a song with an uneven time signature are the best ways to actually practice and eventually master something.

The greatest example of a company recognizing this phenomena was early Facebook. They had a mural on their wall that every developer saw every day, "Done is Better Than Perfect." It's the greatest advice I've ever carried with me. There's a tendency to try to learn more and more to make your end-product even more perfect in the first drafts. But it's always better to charge ahead and give it a go. This isn't 'Nam, there are rules and things need to be done on time.

No idea how I stumbled on this channel, but I would just like to say I really, really like the way you subtitled. It's so easy to read and follow. I often have trouble with small subtitles, so it's really nice to have such large letters with the color changes to follow the speech.
