An excellent and very informative video. I could rarely find the points discussed here anywhere else on the internet in such an organized manner. In India, we have been taught since our dental schooling days to avoid dental radiographs like the plague when it comes to pregnant patients. It was refreshing to see a different point of view. On the other hand, I noticed that you mentioned newer X-Ray machines that are more focussed and affect only a small area. In India, most general dentists still use the older conical PIDs that you mention which scatter the radiation over a larger area. And some that also use x-ray films over digital sensors that we know require a longer exposure. So when you combine both these factors, do you think the fear of taking dental radiographs for pregnant patients is warranted?

You should always limit radiographs when not needed. But radiographs are an important part of endo. If you don't have collimated cones then use the lead apron! Take radiographs when needed. Doing a poor endo is much worse than not taking important and necessary radiographs to improve quality of care.

wait wait wait... now seriosly even though the embriogenesis is finalised in the second trimester how can you do 3 , not one but 3 radiographs to a pregnant woman..this is not about the tooth anymore.. you did the procedure , yeah you did the first one ...but why not wait for the 5 monts after to do that final rx .. or later .. pff well on this part I can not be on your side .. I know this is a difficult case but man ...there have to be so limmits, just plain well researched limits in making rx's to a pregnant woman :(

Dumb argument when out of period of embriogenesis, as there will be no teratogenic factors from an amount of radiation of a 3 small radios, which are equivalent to a dose of everyday radiation person would receive during 3 days. And less radiation than a transatlantic flight. Know your radiology before putting pathetic posts. You could argue that potential pain connected problems and thus elevation of stress hormones would have a larger impact in 2nd and 3rd trimester than a small radio..

Yes. He’s right. The radiation one gets from modern digital radiographs is next to nothing. Furthermore, there’s absolutely no scientific evidence showing there’s harm at these doses. All the people with “opinions” only say use less “just in case” and in fear of litigation if anything unrelated happens to the fetus and a litigious mother decides to sue. Otherwise, there’s no study supporting any harm at these levels. In fact the American Association of Physicist In Medicine (AAPM) position statement unanimously stated there’s inconcluve evidence of any harm from radiation doses less than 100mSv. Each dental X-rays is only a hand full of rads! So, totally safe. The fear is based on litigation, not science!

I do not believe X rays are mandatory especially in first Trimester to relieve pain or for an emergency treatment purposes. So x rays can wait till the second trimester and this can be explained to the patient/consent.

Treating a patient without the full diagnosis and without a radiograph is not proper treatment. If anything goes wrong you are legally responsible since endodontic treatment without X-rays and a proper diagnosis is negligence. This irrational fear of radiographs and pregnancy is completely unfounded and not based on any science at all.

Theres a very common concept in our home country tht pregnant pts should not be given metronidazole or augmentin(amoxicillin+clavulanic acid). Is it true??.plus wat abt paracetamol as analgesic to pregnant pt ,is tht safe??
@AANasseh

Not familiar with that. Amoxicillin is certainly not a contraindication in pregnant patients.

Generally, it’s safe for up to 1-2grams a day but depends on the person’s size and liver status, etc. but it’s the safer analgesic during pregnancy.
