Why is cavity wall insulation made of polystyrene balls, with air spaces, rather than just a solid block of an insulating material (with no air spaces)?

Easier to get into the walls and it will fall down so fill any gaps from the bottom up.

gosh, I just realised why its called "cavity walls" as there is a gap between the exterior and interior wall. lol
