but i have a question. You said in the beginning that all the orbitals outside the first one can hold upto 8 electrons then you yourself negated that indirectly when you showed the great hotel example where the third floor could hold up to 18 electrons and the fourth could hold up to 32. please explain this.

Thank you so much. My teacher talks so fast and is terrible at explaining stuff in general. I looked for a KZitem video since the textbooks did me no good but all of them were so long and over complicated. I generally thought there was no hope till I found this video. Hello Kritin you are correct the capacity of each shell becomes more complex with the addition of more sublevels - the important thing to note is that most of the outer most energy levels can hold up to 8. the noble gases are the only family that actually have 8 in their outer most energy level though.

a "shell" is another name used for an energy level- so a sublevel might be called a subshell

Sometimes, atoms beyond the 2 orbital will hold more than 8 in a molecule. Not a single atom however. Just 8. I think that's right.

I really enjoyed the video! I started reviewing chemistry for PCAT test, so I completely forgot it. And when I went back to textbook, I was just reading and starring at it for 5 hours...
