In the first step of the citric acid cycle, an acetyl group is transferred to oxaloacetate, cleaving its coenzyme-A part hydrolytically. This produces citrate, giving its name to the metabolic pathway. The enzyme of this first reaction is accordingly called citrate synthase. Oxaloacetate serves as a carrier molecule for the acetyl unit.
