Listen, I'm a designer. The only engagement I'm accepting is, "sweetheart, **holds my hand** wanna go customize an engagement ring?" "Omg, yes, absolutely, I do!" I don't care if he asks me to marry him while we eat chicken wings and watch football. As long as I get to choose the jewelry that I'm wearing until they pry it off my cold, dead finger. And before you say anything, it doesn't even have to be expensive, it could be $500. I just want to be included in the process.

Please add one more: Remember, jewelers are salesmen. That pretty engagement ring is JEWELRY. Its NOT an INVESTMENT. Ask any divorcee or pawn shop: a diamond is actually worth very little cash once its been set in a ring, but it can be worthwhile trade-in on a larger one. Save money on the first ring, promise a better one on a future Anniversary. Use the money to set up housekeeping. We bought a very small engagement ring and instead of making payments for a big ring. We had money for a new stove, refrigerator, vacuum, washer, dryer and living room furniture for our first house.

From someone who works in the jewelry industry and got educated to know more about shiny and colored rocks: get an SI (stands for ‘slightly included’) because nobody can tell that it isn’t perfect unless it’s a really shitty rock. It’s SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper and no one gives a shit about your stone, all it means is bragging rights to have a clear diamond Get a G-H in color, best value by far. F is ok, but J and after there’s a very noticeable yellow/brown tint which is accentuated if you get white gold. Platinum is a better metal to get if you’re wanting white gold, because you will have to re-dip white gold in rhodium every couple years to keep it looking white, platinum never fades and is MUCH more durable than white gold. As for size, always get 1-5 points (.01-.05 of a carat) smaller than the whole size you’re wanting, e.g. if you want a 2ct, get a 1.99-1.95ct instead. Because it’s not passing the “magic number” that is 2cts, it’s significantly cheaper than an actual 2ct and nobody will ever be able to tell that it’s not an actual 2ct, and you will be able to ethically call it a 2ct. Have a great day, I hope this helps some dudes struggling with the specifics like I was before I was a shiny rock nerd.

The stones are often nice But the rings themselves can have quality issues when they're cheap so be careful about that Also, If you go cheap you have to get a round cut, bars ovals everything else they just do freehand and it looks like glass because the The angles are wrong and all the light escapes out the bottom The round perfect cut is harder to fuck up, easier/cheaper to do by machine, etc. Getting a standardized quality Will be about $50 for a one carat stone, very cheap. Cruise eBay for a couple days and you can get the same thing for 10 "Non-standardized" stones are a couple dollars each, again you have to get round or be disappointed, at $50 a carrot you can get whatever shape you want and it should be decent quality if you get it from a good store.

I really don't understand why engagement rings have to be ridiculously expensive, I mean it's a symbol of the commitment to the relationship, it's something you should treasure for life and ofcourse you can't sell it, so why to freeze a huge amount of money in it? a simple golden or silver ring would do the job and you can spend the money in a much more useful way, like investing or something.

About a few years ago my friends were picking out engagement rings they hoped to get and I picked out this silver band with a center ridge and a single small green gem. They told me "That's a dudes ring". So I tried again, this time it was a wooden ring with moss in resin, they said "This isn't an engagement ring". Then I tried one more time, and picked out this small silver vine like design with ginko leaves, and a small non protruding stone. with me saying "This one! Because ginkos are a living fossil! And their leaves are like gold fans~!" And one of my friends muttered, "This is going to be as close as she gets, girls." I feel like they were disappointed in my choice.

I’ve worked in jewelry sales and just a bit of a fun fact there is indeed visual differences the higher you go in the inclusion scale (the specks as he calls it). Same with color scale. You’re usually not going to see SI1 and SI2 inclusion or I and J color used in bridal and engagement jewelry because the inclusions are very much visible to the naked eye and the diamonds will appear to be cloudy, which most customers aren’t looking for in that type of jewelry. Now this might be different if you are getting a ring custom made but even then, most jewelers will present the most visually appealing gems to customers rather than something with a more ‘flawed’ appearance. Honestly I usually recommend going with lab grown diamonds. Because they come from a controlled environment they are more visually stunning than mined diamonds and are usually cheaper too - while still being a genuine Diamond.

My wedding ring is a teeny tiny ruby set in a rose gold band and a bunch of tiny black diamonds set in a silver band. My hubby knows I hate materialism, and love minimalism. It's a beautiful ring, but was less than $200. I don't think a more perfect ring for me exists. He also bought a third band of plain silver to honor my late wife. The total was $270 or somewhere close to that. You don't need an expensive ring when you have the perfect man.

@@acelovesdiyschristopher7023 Men usually get a gold band too, but honestly I'm not the person to ask. I've never gotten the hype of rings or an extravagant wedding either. I'm a convert to Islam and it is not custom for us to buy rings. For Muslims, the husband gives the wife a "mahr" or dowry which is an amount of money or a gift decided by the wife. Some women I know just ask for a cat or $100 whereas others might ask for a large sum of money as a safety net for themselves; just depends on what works for the women involved and makes sense for the couples situation.
