The brainchild of Deputy Fire Chief Milt Cawley, this unit was constructed in 2003, through a partnership with the New Brunswick Community College, a private insurance company and many suppliers, at no cost to the fire department. It is built on a gas powered golf cart chassis, and meant to replicate Engine 11 in the Department's fleet.
It is used as a public education tool, and has been regularly featured in various events, and parades throughout the Maritime Provinces and even into Maine. The actual "operator" is in the rear portion behind smoked glass...giving the concept that the children in the front are driving. Children stand in line for over an hour, at community events to have their turn "driving the Engine." It also has a rollup door where a television can be installed for public education as well as a two way intercom system....where the truck can actually carry on a conversation with children. Deputy Chief Cawley's planning and personal initiative has made this tool an extremely effective public education tool.
The video shows the Engine in action, at an open house at the Elgin (NB) Fire Department, October 2012.
