What i appreciate about your videos is that you show the entire process in real time, sanding, drilling, grinding , priming….everything. It gives lots of insight to those of us first time fabricators who are considering a project of our own, and the tools needed. Thanks!

You just created a long pocket for water to collect from condensation you’re going to have rust problems again eventually I suggest you put a couple holes for draining. You also should’ve put weld through primer behind it everywhere you took the paint off of that as well as the bare metal that you welded over, of course I’m talking about your bumper mounting bracket over that patch piece that you weld it up.

Hehe, quick tip: reference the old parts, line up the holes you drilled, scribe or mark again, once you clean the metal. Holes will remain in the same position after cleaning. Don't throw away any part untill you're finished. It came out pretty cool, be careful though, every step you make the most accurate possible, will cause your next step to be easier. This is a say worth considering absolutely. Cheers, keep on! 😉

You could find a oval or split rear window and weld in nicely. Really good work there. I should have done mine that way but it would have snow balled. Mine was not rusty just rear ended. I cut it apart and straightened the crumpled metal and welded it back looks great now. What your doing would have been easier. Keep doing it looking good.

I think you did great job in welding. I dissagree with your "patina" look. After all that work it's a shame to leave it look like a rust bucket, but that's your car, you're decision. One suggestion would be to try to limit the use of the phrase "you guys." Or at least "guys." Really minor critisim considering the fine work you're doing. I had 3 bugs. A '66, '67 and '69. Loved 'em all.

I am watching this restoration chronologically and I am quite behind in the videos. Still, I got to ask: with all the welding you have done and seeing all the damage rust has done, you still think "patina" is a thing?. I am not jumping ahead and watching the last video in this series, so you probably left the bug as-is visually. Personally, I think the Beetle would be a stunner if you decided to paint it. Great job on the chasis.

Great video. I have been playing your videos while I am in the shop. I am fixing a 64 sea blue beetle. I am wondering what is your plan for paint are you trying to match the patina on the repaired areas or doing something else. I am trying on mine to buff the old paint and paint the repaired spots then a matte clear
@CTmoog
Жыл бұрын
Thank man! Yes, I'm to try and match the patina the best I can on the areas I had to put new metal. I'm going epoxy prime and paint the areas first for protection and them try some patina tricks o n too of the new paint. Most of the repairs will be covered with the fenders and stuff. Im going to put it all back together and see what areas need the treatment. Good luck on your 64. The sea blue is a cool color!
