when i worked as a mechanic about ten years ago, we had to do a lot of these. obviously not only was it not the greatest relay due to failure, but why in the world would it be located there. worst of all, places would charge a customer to remove the bumper and then all they would do is cut that square out.

Why did you have to cut to get at the relay?
@mickywinters8451
Жыл бұрын
Because jeep put the relay underneath the damn bumper. The only way to get to it is to remove the bumper. So most if not all jeep owners cut a hole under the headlamp to access the relay. I’fl you’ve never seen a jeep Cherokee without a cut in the bumper like this under the headlamp, then the relay is original and has never been replaced. I’ve had 2 jeeps and both have that cutout. You can’t see it unless you remove the whole headlight.

That electric connector to the fan is shit i melted 2 of them in a week and exploded a radiator, I couldnt even pull it apart !The relay under the headlight is garbage also so i bought a 40 amp relay and a 40 amp fuse ansd a covered holder and powered the new 40 amp relay off that big bolt next to the alternator that has the positive cable attached to the battery from the alternator . I put a lighted rocker switch in the cab so you can turn the fan on or off in the winter time for faster warm up and hooked it to a switched 12 volt source in the inside fuse box. I installed the common ice cube relay right next to the battery and tossed that flat relay under the headlight in the garbage, solved all my overheating issues

Been there- done that! And my radiator has a crack in the exact same place. I've tried patching it a couple of times with JB Weld, but the patch kept blowing off. I ground the plastic and scraped along the crack to rough it up, then cleaned it with acetone. This time I wrapped a length of wire around the elbow 4 or 5 times and then worked the Weld around, under and over the wire. Hopefully the wire will keep the patch from blowing off again. I'll find out tomorrow! Thanks for helping others with your vids!

Obviously the relay was the main issue here but another thought I had was to make sure that clutch on the mechanical fan is fully engaging when hot, especially with that many miles on it (if it's original). In my experience they slip pretty good as they get older and most people never replace them. If the electric fan ever fails again, it would be good to know that at least the mechanical fan is pulling as much air as it should be.

Did you try to cover the hole you made or is it ok to leave it?

coinman1972 I left it, upon closer inspection, it’s in no way a sealed section. When I used to do this at a dealer, we would simply tape it back on.

This is the exact issue I’m having with my 2001 JGC, after watching your video and was going to ask the very same question, what to do with the piece you cut out. If I can find a way to screw it back in somehow but I like the idea of the tape since I may never see it again.

Well, I followed the video instructions, cut into the body of the vehicle, replaced the switch and the fan works again! Yahhoooo!!!! The only question in my mind is whether the engine was harmed when it overheated last Thursday after when wife was driving home from work and stop at the drive through at Jack in the Box, it really boiled all the coolant n water in the reserve tank and I had to put 2 gallons of water back in to limp it home... So far, so good. I just pray really hard that everything is going to be just fine. Still praying to Buddha!

Thank you Thunderhead. I have the same jeep, mine started overheating. I was about to change the fan, but followed this video. It was the relay. Thanks again.
