hello paulmurphy42, this is normal procedure on NK-86 engine, same is on the 154Bs NK8-4 as you describe. BTW nearly all TF engines use a pneumatic start system!

Does anyone know why these engines use a pneumatic starter? The only other aircraft I have ever heard make a sound like this on startup is the B version of the Tu 154 (not the M).

Almost all jetliner engines uses pneumatic starters. Almost all Boeings (excluding 787) and Airbuses uses pneumatic starters. This is the most common way of starting jet engines.

Pneumatic starters are very common on most aircraft. The ducting and pneumatic charter weigh less than copper wires and starter motors. The exception is the 787 which uses electric starters.

Looks like it had been mothballed for a while. What was their purpose in starting it up?

Ellcurr probably for educational and training purposes, also to keep the airplane alive.

Any idea why they didn't retrofit them with the Soloviev D-30?
@applepine613

They already replaced IL-86 With new IL-96-300/400, So replacing the NK-86 with D-30 engine are unnecessary because IL-86 are retired from civil service entirely, and,, IL-86 have a lack on cruise range comparing to new IL-96..

Except IL-80VKP They're still in service, still use old NK-86 engine.. but they're added 2 external fuel tank to improve range👍

@@applepine613 Well D-30 were available during development of IL-86. Interesingly IL-86 was originally supposed to have Lotariev D-18T engines but D-18T had a lot of technical problems and was delayed too long. I'm still wondering why they choosed to upgrade weaker NK-8 instead of modifying more powerful D-30s.

@@Wiktor_Brogowski The D-30KU didn't have the growth potential to power the IL-86. Early in its development, the engineers specified an engine with thrust closer to 35,000-40,000 lbs, but no high-bypass turbofans like that were even in early design phases at that time in the Soviet Union. Also, the Brezhnev administration wasn't willing to allocate precious resources towards the development of a commercial engine rather than military platforms. So, the NK-8 was chosen since it could be uprated. In the end, some 23,'000 lbs of thrust was increased to 28,660 lbs for the NK-86 engine to power the IL-86. Barely adequate for such a large jetliner, and the resultant fuel consumption was huge.
