Where was Freeman for the second and third Scottish tries? At the beginning of the game England won a ruck on the right hand side, Freeman picks up the ball and tries to go over the ruck, how stupid can you get. It seems he is lacking a bit in the old rugby nowse department. And playing Chessum at 6 i think could be a costly mistake against a well drilled Irish pack. I can't remember Chessum making many jackals. Lets hope i am wrong, and he plays a blinder, pardon the pun. Still no Mercer in the squad. What is going on there?

In the after-match dinner speech John Pullin famously said: "We're not much good but at least we turned up". But for the best moment between England and Ireland you have to look at the opening of the game in 2007. It's good to see young talents like Feyi-Waboso getting their chance to stake their claim to a starting berth. Young players like him may be inexperienced at this level, but they play without fear and yes, they'll make mistakes, but how will they learn and build up a level of consistency they need, if they're not given a chance to shine? Liverpool Football Club have shown the willingness and trust in the abilities of their academy youngsters in recent weeks (albeit because a shocking number of injuries to regular first team players) and a number of them have stepped up to the plate and done bits and gained valuable experience for the future. Although I'm a Scotland fan, I saw enough of Feyi-Waboso at Murrayfield to predict he will be a great player for England. All he needs is a chance to play and show what he can do. I think England have enough talent in that back line to do bits, but I think George Ford has kicked away too much ball in this championship. I think England have looked a lot more dangerous if they can keep the ball in hand more. The likes of Hugo Keenan and James Lowe have shown themselves capable of punishing loose kicks, so I don't think England can really afford to kick so much against this Ireland side. If they do kick for territory, it's got to be accurate enough and of such quality that gives flyers like Feyi-Waboso at least a chance of getting on the end to compete and do some damage. The aerial ping-pong that seems to be so much of Borthwick's game plan so far, I feel, will simply play into Ireland's hands and heap more pressure on the England defence they don't really need. Of course, if you're going to try and play more expansively, your backs need to be secure in their handling. Scotland were able to exploit several English handling errors two weeks ago to the extent that England's perceived advantage in what personnel they could call on from the bench was rendered irrelevant because they'd left themselves too much of a gap to make up on the scoreboard. This is going to be a tough task for England, even although the game is at Twickenham; Ireland have shown they have the cohesive game to win back-to-back Grand Slams. They have such strength in depth now that even losing someone like James Ryan, they don't really lose anything in terms of quality. Their continuity of selection has been important to the side having a settled air and a solid unity of purpose about it. Each member of the side knows what his job is and has an almost telepathic relationship with his team mate to his inside and his outside. I think Ireland will be too street-wise and have too much line speed for England this weekend. Even if England manage to score first like they did at Murrayfield, I feel Ireland do not panic and start throwing caution to the wind and take silly risks. Like all the best sides, they continue to believe in the process, adapt and find a way to turn the scoreboard back in their favour, and I expect them to win pretty comfortably by a couple of scores. Hopefully, the weather on game day is conducive to handling attacking rugby, because both side have exciting talent, who can do something extraordinary. May the best team win.

Erm… yeah it’s a very scary Ireland squad + bomb squad. They are almost opposite ends of spectrum in terms of where the teams at in terms of development. Just want England to try and stay in the fight.
@TrezenEN

I think England suffer from having too many players to choose from. Whereas Wales clearly had a starting team for the past 10 years, and are now clearly in a period of complete transition, England haven't had had a consistent team for the past 3 years, let alone 10. Ireland and Scotland have pretty much had the same team now for a number of years, which is why Scotland are the best they've been in some time, and Ireland are probably second only to NZ, but England have always lacked consistency in selection which has somewhat led to them always being in a period of development - this may be why they consistently underdeliver. What they need is to back a group of players for the next 4 years at minimum with minimal changes, however where most other nations struggle to find new talent to replace existing players with, it seems England are at a loss as to which players to choose, and therefore rarely ever end up with a winning combination.
@henrymilleruk100
7 ай бұрын
@@TrezenEN I agree - sadly I don’t think the talent ceiling is high enough to stick, we are a year or two out from having 4 rock solid props for the future and maybe a year away from centres making the future of the shirt their own. We have a lot of players - but not enough out and our talent (that fits the game plan) that stands out as the clear and obvious pick. I think we will have 12 more months of players dropping in and out but hopefully by next six nations a good chunk will be locked down.

Needles to say they got a standing ovation for over 5 minutes in Lansdowne Rd. John Pullin wanted to go however the RFU were reluctant understandably to jeopardise the English teams safely & so John pullin phoned WJMcB ( Willie John Mc Bride) . Willie simply said " You must come " a comment that still moves a lot of Irish people in the knowledge of what it meant. To this day both quotes are said in the run up to this fixture. Thanks Tim for hilighting it, not many English know how much it ment to us back then all they remember is Martin Johnson's disrespect to our President.

I love that story from 1973 - proper rugby and human values shown there by the crowd. A slight parallel that I can relate to was when the Australian team did not pack up and go home during the 2005 ashes, when the 7/7 bombings happened in London - they must have felt vulnerable so far from home with all that going on, but they stuck around and produced a really entertaining series of cricket... Much as the rivalry is strong, the camaraderie is stronger - I will always be grateful to them for bringing light into a very dark time.

Don't know if someone has already in 300 or so plus comments, so here goes. There's an excellent documentary on that game you mentioned between Ireland and England in Lansdowne Road. It's called 'The Team that Turned Up' It builds on the background leading up to the game & has some interviews with players who were involved on the day, some of which were excellent, especially with some of the English players. I believe it was aired by RTE & was on the RTE Player for a while but it's been taken down now or at least I believe so because I can't find it anywhere. You might have some pull with your TNT (BT) sports colleagues to source you a copy of the programme, it's a definite worthwhile watch. A couple of other Ireland related rugby documentaries to get your hands on are Brian O'Driscoll's 'Shoulder to Shoulder' & Andrew Trimble's 'For Ulster and Ireland', both of which focus heavily on the unifying force of rugby on the island of Ireland.

Even looking back at that combined team now, and even knowing what the result was (teams, not individuals win matches) I'd still pick same players. Which Englishmen are clearly better than their opposite on that team? Picking today, onrecent form, I'd say Underhill over JVDF, but aside from that don't think there's any. Or which Bulls clearly go in over the Leinster counterpart for this match, in your opinion?

@EggchasersRugby I agree on the Bulls. I think the amount of time most of the Irish players spend playing and training together is their greatest strength, England are usually in state of flux. I've seen pundits from Woodward down predicting hidings for England against Ireland over the last couple of years, it never materialised and I do wonder what is behind it, it's like English people feel obliged to boost Ireland up, the Kiwis and South Africans don't suffer from this, they will come out straight and say where Ireland stand.

Happy with that team. Pretty close to what I would have picked, from the available squad. I really want to see England maintaining shape in attack and displaying greater understanding of their new defensive system.

Excitement is building for this clash now. I'll be there! Tim, I was impressed by how you managed to pluck two markedly different dimensions of starting XV from the squad. We have dimensions? 😂 The first was my preference. So I can work with Borthwick's XV but I would have preferred Chandler starting. Chessum is not a flanker and what you gain at line out you lose in dynamism and all-round impact. Lawrence at 13 with Dingwall inside. Lawrence-Slade is not right. I rate Ollie. He looked rusty to me last game, not outright shite. Fair that Furbank has another crack but Steward is the 15 who allows us to put more consistent pressure on the opposition with the boot, which we need to do … until this mythical expansive game starts to materialise. But the big man must be brought into the attacking line more. Anyway, let's hope Furbank rises to the occasion sniffs out a chance or two. Anticipating that England will be more than competitive, they will rattle Ireland early on but, ultimately, they will be outdone by their inaccuracy/indecision and a late flourish from the Irish.

I can't believe Steve Borthwick has to hold off naming his team until Eggchasers release their list.

Borthwick’s choice of Slade is the right one as it gives Feyi-Wabuso an Exeter mentor inside him. Though I’m never quite convinced by Slade, I think Borthwick has decided he is captain of defence for the 6N. If Lawrence can just catch the ball, this back line may challenge Ireland. Incidentally, he has done the right thing putting Smith on the bench. First because it won’t stress any rustiness after 5 weeks without a game, and second because introducing Care,Smith and Dombrandt later in the game will bring all that Quins speed and understanding as the Irish began n to tire.

@EggchasersRugby can you do a post six nations breakdown on the home nations and what makes a successful team and why some teams and nations are struggling, it would be great to have a non biased view on what makes success, from provinces, rfu, player overseas ruling. kind of a full breakdown on what makes success for all home nations and what the ongoing hardships are of international to club level. you have a great following and I think you can paint a clearer picture to some of us who are still confused. I know it'll be a long video but im sure it would get some great feedback

Irish here. Admire waboso, he can be really dangerous just hope his talent is handled right. I recall the hype around arundell and it just never was on show for England.

Even though James Ryan is injured, your point still stands, just about another player- Gary Ringrose is fit to play 🤯
