I was at Wembley for the final England vs Hungary game with my Dad. I remember Mariner scoring at the other end (I could not see much). The best bit was the celebrations at the end. This is a fantastic video compilation! I remember some of these games well. It's funny - looking at that in 2024, three days after Gareth Southgate handed in his resignation and you think to yourself (or at least I do), if social media had existed back then, how much flak would Greenwood and the players have taken? I mean, based on these highlights (and the memories of my dad moaning and shouting at the telly), we were a side of talented players with no real consistent plan (and definitely not one in defence). Matched by the Romanians? Beaten by some Norwegian milkmen? Wow. And isn't it funny how delighted John Motson sounds at the end of our 'huff-and-puff' victory against Hungary at the end? Just for qualifying? How spoiled we've become, making finals, semis... I'm not saying it reinvents some of the more defensive tactics of recent years, but perhaps it shows that we haven't really changed to any sustained degree.

Delving into the records, I notice Keegan missed about half of this campaign through injury. Brooking was sidelined for a while. These were England's most creative, incisive & clinical players with a good understanding, the former one of the indisputably world class members of the squad. Also: Gates (briefly), Mills, Mariner, Butcher of Ipswich Town were Eng players up to 1982. Won't happen for a so-called "provincial" side any more in this £-talks Premier League era.

Been watching since 1990. The 1998 team is the best team England had, all the problems started with a sloppy loss to Romania in the group stage which put England on a very difficult path in the second round. Still managed a 2-2 draw with Argentina with 10 men and a legit goal cancelled, remember Argentina was an excellent team, they lost to the amazing Dutch team in the quarterfinals mostly because they were extremely exhausted from the England game and the Holland game was just two days after that, Argentina did not even train before the game, still it took a coin toss finale for the Dutch to pull a winner at the 90th minute. Now thinking about it, 1998 was probably the strongest World Cup.

We had a Harry Kanesque striker in Paul Mariner, and a Lineker style poacher in Woodcock. We had pace and we had goals from midfield in abundance. The manager Greenwood was also tactically highly underrated. But what really did us, was the format and Algeria being cheated out of a quarter final by Germany and Austria. @@thomridgeway1438 Mariner's little flicks and passes not to mention movement were underrated..Coppell, Brooking and Keegan were injured though in the Spain match...I would have started with Brooking and Keegan in that match and played Hoddle as well..once Brooking and Keegan faded (if they did due to fitness) put Mariner and Francis..with Hod providing..

@Thom Ridgeway, the 1990 side had enormous potential too. Gascoigne, Waddle, John Barnes, David Platt, Lineker, Peter Beardsley. Good defense with Des Walker, Paul Parker, Terry Butcher, Stuart Pearce, Mark Wright etc.

England had some good players back then but I think their play was a bit too predictable. They relied heavily on having a big center forward to knock balls down. Too bad Keegan was injured going into the WC.

Henry Root letters...to Brian Clough.... "you need to buy a big lad, who can grace the European stage. here is 1 £ to help you sign Sulser" "I noticed the wee man, Archie Gemmill, blow his nose on the pitch. This is not the Notts Forest way" Clough: "Thank you Mr Root, i have added the 1£ to the Sulser fund, although if someone like Keegan becomes availiable, I hope you understand I will spend it on him"

Yep I agree, I loved Mariner as a deep lying forward with some great weapons , I think the finishing was not so good but this is where Francis should have been played on top with Mariner sitting wider and deeper..Jack Charlton was urging Howe/Greenwood to do this.

If England would have kept the same team of 1982 with some additional players of 1986 .. England would have won the 1986 world Cup... This is the biggest mistake England does with their team and players.. Even today England does the same foolish thing and end up getting eliminated from competition either with penalty or late goals

The 82, England WC, squad was one of the best to leave these shores for a major tournament. It was the format of 82 WC, two group stages instead of a straight knock out that cost them.

Mariner was on a record equalling goal run from his dodge ( ball hit boot- all good ) goal that took us to Espania ) that good strike vs the French was his 6 th goal equalling Jimmy Greaves in scoring in their successive games. Francis was quality though always seemed to be crossing the ball. Woodcock in my opinion was the best goal getter we had ' them last two an Stevie Coppell would have been my 3 up front , no room 4 Keegan who when he got his chance missed a Blatant sitter - tried to do his trade mark flick , when the silly sod only had to head it . Robbo in the middle , yeah the squad was ok mate.
