Welcome to English in a Minute!
A hook is a curved piece of metal. A hook is used to catch or hang things. But what does it mean to be “off the hook”?
D: Anna, our presentation is in 5 minutes! Where have you been?
A: Oh, you meant this Thursday! As in, today.
D: I knew this would happen.
A: I can still prepare!
D: No, I prepared. I had Ashley practice with me as a backup. So, she can take your place. You’re off the hook, Anna.
If you are “off the hook,” you’ve escaped from trouble or a difficult situation. You’re no longer required to do something you were supposed to do often because someone else is doing it instead. You’re welcome, Anna.
