I felt a disturbance in the force, as if a thousand Cornish people cried out at once after being told their favourite food doesn't exist

In phonetics there are some rules to explain this: : :_+"fricatives sourdes" (sorry I only know the french terms) like /s/ and /f/ (+ not necessary /p,t,k/) -> /a:/ : general rule which says that when is followed by two consonnants it is prononced with the short sound : /æ/ explained by the prononciation of the original words which follow the half-rule in which : + or -> /eı/. And because the isn't considered to be a strong suffix, the prononciation of the rest of the word does not change
