Xu Jiayu, born on August 19, 1995 in Wenzhou, Zhejiang, is an international swimming superstar and a representative figure of Chinese men's swimming. He is currently a 2013 undergraduate student at Antai College of Economics and Management, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and a student of the champion class of graduate students at Beijing Sports University.
In 2002, Xu Jiayu, who was only 7 years old, began to show his talent in Wenzhou Youth Sports School; in 2008, he joined the Zhejiang Provincial Swimming Team and took the first step in professional swimming. In 2011, he won the bronze medal in the men's 100-meter backstroke at the National City Games; in 2012, he won the runner-up in the men's 200-meter backstroke at the National Swimming Championships. In 2013, he lived up to expectations and won the men's 200-meter backstroke championship at the National Swimming Championships, and won the men's 100-meter and 200-meter backstroke double championships at the National Games.
In 2014, Xu Jiayu broke three national records in the men's 50m, 100m and 200m backstroke at the National Swimming Championships, and won the gold medal in the men's 4×100m medley relay at the Incheon Asian Games with a record-breaking performance. In 2016, he won the silver medal in the men's 100m backstroke at the Rio Olympics. In 2017, Xu Jiayu achieved another success, winning the men's 100m backstroke championship at the World Swimming Championships and the Short Course World Cup Tokyo Station. In 2018, he won 5 gold medals at the Jakarta Asian Games, becoming China's fourth Asian Games five-gold king. In 2019, he won the men's 100m backstroke championship at the World Swimming Championships.
In 2020, he broke the world record for the men's and women's 4×100m medley relay with a time of 3 minutes 38.41 seconds at the National Swimming Championships. In 2021, he won the silver medal in the men's and women's 4×100m medley relay at the Tokyo Olympics. In 2023, he won five individual and team gold medals in the men's backstroke at the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, becoming the Chinese athlete with the most individual gold medals in the history of the Asian Games.
In April 2024, Xu Jiayu won the men's 100m and 200m backstroke double championships at the National Swimming Championships, as well as the men's and women's 4×100m medley relay and the men's 4×100m medley relay. On July 30, he won the men's 100m backstroke runner-up at the Paris Olympics; on August 5, he won the men's 4×100m medley relay gold medal at the Paris Olympics.
