There are many pairs of words in English that are confusing. Today, we will tackle one such pair: lose-loose. In today’s video, we will do the following:

Lose: This is a verb. The s in this word makes the /z/ sound. Here are the common meanings of the word lose:
- To misplace something, to not be able to find something. E.g.: I lose my keys often.
- The opposite of win: E.g.: We lose the game by 2 points.
- To no longer have possession of or to no longer retain something. E.g.: Lose appetite, lose motivation, lose a friend
- To earn less money than you are spending. E.g.: The newspaper was losing money.
The adjective form of "lose" is “lost”. E.g.: The lost dog was found in the garage.
Loose: This is an adjective. The s in this word makes the /s/ sound. Here are some common meanings of the adjective loose:
- Not properly or securely fastened. E.g.: One of the legs of the chair is loose
- Something that does not fit tight. E.g.:The shirt was too loose for me.
- Not exact, or strict. E.g.: That is a loose translation
The verb form of this word is "loosen". E.g.: He loosened his tie when he got home.
