Strengthen the internal structures through strength training, plyometrics. By working on the fascia, tendon, muscle, the bone will harden as a result and your fascia will act as an armor

Very well put, I think it’s actually modern medicine that puts people off it. People are worried about arthritis. However, I have never seen any person however old that has done this type of conditioning complain of joint pain at all. That said I am not about to start practice iron palm, because I am just as afraid of crippling myself with chronic pain and inflammation as anyone else, trusting a Sifu with your body is obviously the only outside of being a little crazy that people will go through the initial pains to get the results. Having someone who has done the work reassuring you that you will be fine when your instincts are telling you to stop is the only way a typical modern person would actually keep going to the end. As a Buddhist Lama we have similar traditions for the mind where your really feeling very intense mental anguish in order to become more calm and relaxed and I don’t believe my students would do this on their own. It takes me reassuring them that the surface is right there and the waves will stop and they will be able to breathe. Constantly being pushed to your breaking point is actually how Buddhists become so calm and confident. The serenity comes from a sort of relativity in life where you have walked through hell so most normal human suffering feels easy in comparison. It’s exactly the same as with hardening the body modern medicine tells us we are fragile and vulnerable but it really does poorly at emphasizing our adaptability. Same with mental health, the mental health movement has created far far more insanity than it has fixed. Because it teaches people that they are fragile and vulnerable and fails to teach them they can also be mentally durable and adaptable. Part of it is capitalistic your illness means more business, part of it is the model itself is a disease model it has zero explanation of mental health and even less about mental strength and power. It can tell you all day about how people break but it does nothing to assure you of your own ability to trust in your own inner strength as a result people are becoming more ignorant of their mental fortitude with every generation. The term hearty is in the past, nobody would call modern man hearty and durable, that is a direct result of the tunnel vision of our secular philosophy on illness and the latent Christian mentality of pity for victims is a very intoxicating mix. We have lost our sense of deeper strength and ability to relie on a deity, the devotion to God is an indestructible amor for the mind as long as servitude to God is the central driving force in one’s life one can attribute deep meaning to suffering, hence the Christian crucifixion having a cross to bare is another lost saying. Suffering is no longer seen as a spiritual right of passage or a necessity in the pursuit of toughness, it is basically a inconvenient biological mistake to most people. In both body and mind people see suffering as vestigial (a useless growth to be cut off) never is it portrayed except in overt masculine culture as being a necessary part of life. Therefore ancient traditions and there wisdom as it pertains to embracing or even generating pain as a useful experience, is seen as superstitious or simply beyond modern people. It is repelling for modern people addicted to soft convient lifestyles to put themselves through harm for anything besides money. People such as yourself who have kind teachers who demonstrate extreme competence are very very lucky, most human beings never experience the mysteries gated behind pain. having a guide who can assure you the ancient wisdom is absolutely functional and not old superstition or outdated misunderstanding of biology is really the only way forward for people. There would be far more interest in these old methods if people had any idea the quality of life they were missing out on. The initial push out the door and into the boundless possibility is too much to ask of most modern people who are completely brainwashed to regard any discomfort as a sign of something being wrong. The revulsion to even the basic psychological pain of discipline is a stopping point of personal development in this age, much less actually confronting your deeply embedded sense of self preservation. The collective positive karma is waning as people reject the main sources of good fortune as being antiquated superstition. People are so hardened against anything that appears unscientific that they can’t bare to even engage with wisdom scientifically and test it for themselves. The rejection of all “superstition” out of hand, is the most deeply ignorant and unscientific habit of modern people, the notion of seeing for yourself and being patient with exploitation and seeking results with tedious or mysterious processes means these traditions are rapidly wilting out of existence. The light of consciousness is what preserves the tree of knowledge, people are becoming dumb beasts in the hypnosis of hubristic modern intellect. People think because someone can explain something away that they know and understand it. As a result people are beating away their own good fortune as something shamefully superstitious and unscientific. The collective karma of humanity is becoming very thin, it seems we have really misunderstood the ground we stand on, the cultivation of old foundations and old wells of prosperity are being completely ignored because people don’t realize that everything they now is unnatural. We are riding on old steam and we are no longer cultivating the fire that put us here. As a result even when someone puts forth such a perfect and concise argument as this video, most people will simply think it is not worth trying. They hear but they can’t connect the dots. Your doing a very great service to humanity by putting this knowledge out, but my own experience tells me you likely get very few takers. It’s rare to meet an account open minded person with interest and even rarer to meet someone like that who also has the circumstances to be able to practice. It’s what the Buddha called a precious human life, out of all the stated conditions of a precious human life the most significant is leisure ie free time to practice. The Buddha rightly concluded that Busyness and Desire were the deepest suffering of humanity. Even those who would listen are usually carried away from opportunity by obligation or by there base desire for pleasure. Both of which are fires which goad people to waste their lives in unfruitful pursuits. A person with resources, free time, interest, an open mind, aptitude and a genuine pressing desire to know the secrets of some mysterious wisdom, a genuine desire that is strong enough to keep them moving forward without losing focus. Such a student is very precious, it is a very deep reason why aithentic teachers care so much for there students because you are a kindred spirit, you see yourself in your students both in there strength and weakness and you do truly respect them for daring to try knowing how hard it has been for yourself a student which holds your teaching as precious is the greatest gift of any devotee of any ancient tradition. Doesn’t matter if it’s carpentry, martial arts, or meditation, if you give your life to something you quickly find yourself alone without peers and a student quickly becomes an old familiar friend and a son or daughter. I truly respect you for trying to make a living selling something which very very few people care about. Your an inspiration, I wish you luck. People who devote themselves to wisdom and understanding, devote themselves to greatness, they are the light of the world and it is these great people alone who keep the world from falling into darkness. It is frightening to see how fast it has faded in just a century we have gone from so many masters to so few it is literally unbelievable to even find one. The minting of new masters of any art form is the singular most noble pursuit of humanity and we are getting pretty overt in our rejection of mastering anything. We have gone from warriors to pawns and society is openly contemptuous of strength. A very strange time to be sincerely devoted to mastery, a very strange and lonesome time.

Outstandingly, astutely, and profoundly stated. But even with all that, you still wouldn't practice Iron Palm. That's what gets _me._ Anyhow... I can be that student. As soon as I get the funds.

Whilst I respect anyone who trains with this amount of focus, I do question what real benefit it brings and what kind of long term loss to sensitivity it may cause. Many years ago, in the 80s, when I started training in Kung Fu, I asked my teacher about these training methods and he said that they were not really necessary; as for any real application it was much more likely that speed, power, agility and sensitivity would be far more useful. We were told to train soft parts of body, like palms, to hit hard parts of body, like chin, jaw, forehead; then use hard parts of the body, such as fists, elbows and knees to strike soft parts of the body like groin area, ribs, throat, nose, eyes. In any case, he said, what good are stone hands against a gun or machete or knife? However, we did train Iron Shirt, knuckle press-ups and hard sparring with no protective equipment; but the focus was on breathing and conditioning of body and bones, but not to develop callousness or unnatural deformities of the hands.

This reminds me of why many old school boxers would condition their hands with thin bag gloves vs full padded gloves. Many of those fighters would often break facial bones. Florentino Fernandez broke his opponents arm during a fight. Pepino Cuevas broke an opponent's facial bone, almost every fight. A lot of the injuries they'd cause their opponents, you do not see very often today.

Starting our your conditioning should actually be strength training/or body weight as that is the first and most used step for bone conditioning. Training your body through exercise will make your bones much stronger and it toughens them more for said direct conditioning. Stick to weight bearing for the knuckles so knuckle push ups,and anything involving grip such as pull ups or farmer carries is a great first step. The heavy bag with gloves is also great but that requires you learning how to strike properly.

Correct the weight exercise or a calisthenics is a good start specially with explosive movement it help the bone to adapt then later on you start getting a stone sand or whatever you think suit you

Closed fist weighted push-ups and closed fist wall push-ups. Also mix in explosive push-ups with a closed fist on an exercise mat once you build more endurance.
